Asked by lunabean (630points) November 30th, 2009 from iPhone

Just wondering if there is an average time when a dog’s food is digested after it eats.

This seems pretty comprehensive, bot I haven’t done any fact checking.

I think that really depends on what kind of dog we’re talking about here.

For example, I’m a Golden Retriever in a suit. I have nine different digestion times.

Are you just wondering, or are you waiting for something?

Actually, one of our dogs was a crayon-eater in her younger years, which allowed us to track her digestion times quite nicely, if a bit colorfully.

Typically she seemed to excrete the previously consumed crayons in about 12 hours, along with whatever else she had eaten around that time. The color of the crayons seemed to have no effect on speed of digestion (or in the case of the crayons, non digestion).

Since we feed our dogs at 7 am and at 7 pm, and they invariably poop right after eating, it would seem that our other dogs also seem to spend about 12 hours processing a load of food into a load of crap. Politicians seem to produce loads of crap much more rapidly.

Depends on how long you cook it.

My dogs would poop about 15 minutes after eating, and they ate twice a day, so I think 12 hours sounds right.
