Need help with Christmas present idea...?

Asked by naivete (2463points) December 2nd, 2009

I’m in a counseling class (we are trained to be peer counselors) in high school and our teacher decided she wanted to exchange gifts in the class via secret santa. I end up getting the most troubled kid in my counseling class (he smokes, he drinks, he steals, he does the hard drugs). I’m at a COMPLETE loss as to what to buy for him (I want him to genuinely like it). I dont want to just half-ass (for lack of better word) this gift. As for his interests, I know he likes basketball.. and spanish rap music… but that’s all. Any help?

An Itunes gift card. It would be too hard to choose a cd for him.

My teens liked gift cards. If you got him one that included a whole mall, he could pick and choose.

A case of beer?

Either that or maybe a jersey of they don’t cost too much.

@Phobia Believe it or not (as much as this may be supporting his uhm.. addictions?) I actually thought of getting him shot glasses. I’m only worried that my teachers wont be too impressed by it.

Or a carton of cigarettes.

@chyna and @faye Gift cards seem too impersonal but it’s a good idea (:

Make your best guess about his tastes, and get him a book. There’s a book out there for everyone.

No no promoting of that stuff!!! the beer and smokes- that’s for grownups.

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities I was trying to show him a newspaper column once that was no more than 20 sentences and he read it for about 10 seconds and then replied: “I can’t read this shit. My head hurts”

He can sell gift cards for drugs..
I would definitely find out his favorite team/player and go from there.. a jersey would be great.

A basketball?? What is your price limit because there are some pretty awesome basketballs out there.

Or This

Don’t over think things. I would just get him a nice basketball. A 25 dollar one is actually a lot better than a ten dollar one. I guess the question is does he play or like to watch on TV?

Beaten by seconds..

RedPowerLady's avatar

@johnpowell hey great minds think alike ;) I know hubby loves basketball and was thrilled when I bought him a “nicer” one

Nah. I got it covered. Thanks anyway.

So, if he would sell the gift card, he could sell anything for drugs!

What about homemade brownies? They’re something NO teenage boy will refuse and it won’t break the bank for you.

Phobia's avatar

@sliceswiththings that wouldn’t be homemade special brownies, would it?

Get him an illustrated novel, like Watchman, or a book on graffiti artists. Just because he’s into deviant stuff doesn’t mean that’s all there is to the person. Don’t gift to the dark side.
