How do you feel about celebrating 4/20?

Asked by Clair (3832points) December 3rd, 2009

Honoring Bob Marley or not, how do you feel about celebrating the biggest stoner holiday of the year? Do you think it’s ridiculous or meaningful? Why or why not? Do have any memories to support your answer? (That aren’t completely typical, please.) Do you have any 4/20 traditions? (Date or time.)

My son goes to City Hall Park to smoke up in front of the police station with about 1000 other people. I think marijuana should be legalized but I don’t do anything about it.

4/20 is also Hitler’s birthday and the date of one of the most infamous high school shootings. No I won’t be celebrating it. Not to mention I don’t smoke pot.

Everyday is 420.

But any date that someone wants to honor, someone else will hate.

I missed school last year to go to a 4/20 festival. It was okay. I didn’t go to celebrate Bob Marley though. I had my own celebration.

@faye Yet there is good reason to dislike this one, IMO.

Nothing, I do not celebrate criminals.

I never knew 4/20 was about Bob Marley. I suppose I should have though… I think it’s fine to do. Maybe I’ll do it next year =)

I think it’s cool (and funny), but I don’t smoke pot so there’s not much in it for me.

IT’S FUN. last year my car broke down and it was pouring rain, but that did not damper our spirits!

Probably made it funnier!

4/20 is a big thing around here on the west coast. I’ve heard that BC bud (as it’s known) is some of the best worldwide. There’s a couple of things that upset me about this celebration. Every year that I’ve been in high school, I’ve noticed the age at which the kids are lighting up decreasing. I only started paying attention in grade 8 when mostly the boys were being exposed to it. Now I’m a senior and and I estimate that 85 percent of my graduating class has smoked pot within the last week. (I overheard a conversation in class today b/w 2 boys who were debating over whethe or not they should ‘get lit’ before or after the school dance). The second thing that (very personally) upsets me about 4/20 and probably drugs in general is having to lose a family member in the drug trade. Legalizing it /may/ help but there are so many gangs trying to control the market now, who’s to say they won’t be there after… Its hard to understand where that pot came from and who might have been hurt in the process of you acquiring that pot.

Who knows.. I may have had a different stance on this if I had not lost someone so close to me in the eighth grade. Hm.

I suppose I ‘celebrate’ it; last 420 I cut school and went into the city with some friends, hung out in Washington Square park and smoked some weed. It was a fun day, but that’s about it.

Some people use it as an excuse to smoke more weed than it makes sense to smoke.
