Do you have any helpful tips on potty training?

Asked by stormy (332points) December 13th, 2009

I am trying to potty train my little boy but it is not fun at all! He is a few weeks from being three and we have not had much success. Do you have any helpful tips that worked for you?

I have heard that boys are harder to train than girls. As a mom with two boys, this is what I did. I would let them sit on the toilet backwards. Sounds weird, but it keeps everything in the toilet and it worked for them. As they got better control, then I taught them to stand up and pee. If he is having a hard time peeing, turn the water on. For some reason, the sound of water can bring that urge on. Also, try getting him to poop after he eats, he’ll be more likely to. Otherwise, its just patience patience patience (which is hard, I know!). He’ll get it soon enough.

They do it when they’re good and ready – don’t know if that’s a helpful tip or not!

Follow his cue and wait until he is ready. All three of my boys potty trained very quickly not long after they turned three. I can honestly say I didn’t do much at all, just had the potty there and helped guide them along.

A couple of weeks after his third birthday my oldest walked up to me, diaper in hand, and said “my diaper was irritating me so I took it off.” He was potty trained from that day forward.

Seriously wait as long as you have to, be patient, and when he is ready it will happen almost instantly.

My son’s and grandsons seemed to figure it out on their own. It seemed like I was diapering them until once or twice, they asked me to come in the bathroom with them, where I had a tiny potty chair, and said see, I did it. They still needed diapers at night for another few months.

For boys, sit them backwards on the toilet (facing the tank), that seemed to work for us. They don’t miss and they can see what’s happening better. Then when they felt comfortable they just stood up.
