Have you ever bought an "As Seen On TV" Item ?

Asked by Pretty_Lilly (4660points) December 17th, 2009

And turned out it did not work as perfectly as seen on TV.

I bought the Ron Popeil knife set but they do work great.

What really frosted me tho is that the add said you got two sets for the price of one.

Turns out that you have to also pay a postage and handling fee for the second one that combined with the postage and handling for the first set adds up to the full price for a second set anyhow. Obviously you expect some type of postage charge but THIS was way way too much. Ridiculous.

But they are great knives.

I bought Hercules Hooks. They worked pretty well but were kind of difficult to get into the wall (it looked like you could just push them in with your little finger on tv…that was not the case at all).

Pretty_Lilly's avatar

@jmah I heard they are great for wrapping around your fist and smacking hookers! though!

I bought those strap perfect things for bras and I love them :)

oh and billy blanks workout tapes…. turns out you don’t look like him after 2 weeks

AstroChuck's avatar

I bought the entire family some stylish Snuggies for us to wear at outdoor sporting events. Sadly, people only laugh at us.

chyna's avatar

I bought that putty crap that screaming Billy Mays hawked. It didn’t work.

knitfroggy's avatar

I got the Vidalia onion chopper a couple years ago and I love it! It works just great.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@chyna It doesn’t? I have some…haven’t needed to use it yet.

That shark thing that’s supposed to open the clam shell plastic packages? What a complete piece of crap!!!

danbambam's avatar

those are the best items ever!

I bought a knock-off Sham-Wow (called Wow) for a Hillbilly Dirty Santa party.

I also bought a set of Forever Sharp knives at a demonstration at Wal-Mart. I’ve used them for everything (including cutting a soda can because I was curious).

chyna's avatar

@jbfletcherfan Let me know when you use it if it works for you.

The Ped-Egg rocks.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@chyna Will do, honey.

SamIAm's avatar

@Cupcake : you think so? my sister got it for me for xmas last year and it feels like a cheese grater to me, and emptying it is SO gross!!
@knitfroggy : what is this onion chopper you speak of? i’ve heard of onion goggles to wear, which are on my xmas wish list. i always use onions and can’t stand the eye tearing, does this product prevent that?

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Samantha_Rae the onion chopper is called the Slap Chop. It looks like the Pampered Chef chopper I have, & yes, they do a great job at chopping. It does help with the tearing, I’m sure, being enclosed in the chopper.

Cupcake's avatar

@Samantha_Rae – emptying it makes me feel like I accomplished something.

SamIAm's avatar

@Cupcake : haha ewww!
@jbfletcherfan : which is better, pampered chef chopper or slap chop? i’ve seen the slap chop but i feel like it doesn’t work. i definitely need to invest in one of those though!

jbfletcherfan's avatar

I’ve never used the Slap Chop. Since I have the PC, I don’t need it. But it looks very similar in the way it’s made. They both open up the same way for washing, etc. Personally, I’d think the PC is made a little better, I don’t know. That’s just my opinion.

chyna's avatar

@jbfletcherfan I also have the PC. I’m not sure how the slap chop can get away with designing a devise exactly the same as the PC, but they did. The price is about the same, but the slap chop is at every store, so would be easier to buy.

Yes, the Ronco Pasta Maker…I recommend it.

Bought a Water Jet which I like, bought a Snuggie which I like, and bought a Slap Chop which I havent used yet.

I ordered the Titan Peeler the other day and they’re on their way!

I’ve bought Smooth Away and hated it. It gave me a rash and made my skin so sensitive that I couldn’t even put a long sleeved shirt on for 2 days without being in pain! Not to mention the hair grew back within a few days anyway. Why not just shave? It takes half the time and hurts a lot less.

I also bought Bumpits and was very disappointed also. They don’t even stay in your hair. And they look ridiculous. I looked like I had a cone head!

The one thing I did like were the Strap Perfect Clips. One broke immediately and one fell off but eventually I got the hang of it. It did make my boobs look larger and lifted. And my straps were hidden, so it did it’s job. I would recommend them.

Supacase's avatar

@jbfletcherfan The onion chopper is different than the slap chop.

Buttonstc's avatar

The slap chop is round and can mince quite finely.

The onion chopper is much larger, rectangular with a square grid and can do a much larger quantity of onions, but in larger chunks and not minced finely.

And IMHO both can’t hold a candle to a sharp, good quality chef’s knife.

:D

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Buttonstc Oh, you’re talking about THAT thing? That’s the most useless piece of crap ever invented. We have one. I used it about once & that’s it. Thanks for reminding me about it. It’s going in the trash.

Buttonstc's avatar

Yeah I couldn’t imagine ever needing it unless I were fixing salad for an army or something. Who ever uses significantly more than one onion at a time in normal everyday cooking?

But the way they exaggerate in those commercials is ludicrous. They try to make peeling and chopping an onion seem like the most gargantuan task.

It’s the same thing they do with those microwaveable steamed potatoes to make mashed potatoes. It just ain’t that hard.

Just don’t peel them and scoop them out after cooking, mash, and bingo ! You have mashed potatoes at a tenth of the price. Imagine that? Amazing !

Ha ha

AstroChuck's avatar

@chyna- I bought some of that putty too. What a waste of money.

I forgot to mention my Magic Bullet. That thing is frickin’ great!

Pretty_Lilly's avatar

@AstroChuck Well the Magic Bullet did not work so well with JFK.

chyna's avatar

I so need to check out the Magic Bullet.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Pretty_Lilly That’s not even a little bit funny!!!

Ansible1's avatar

My g/f got the Magic Bullet she loves it, now she wants a Slap Chop…and she was very surprised when I clued her in on Vince

Buttonstc's avatar

I’ve heard and read great things about the Magic Bullet. But they’re selling them on TV for $99.99.

If you’re a member of one of the Warehouse clubs (or know a friend who is) they are half that. And that’s not including the exaggerated shipping fees they slap on to boot.

That’s my main gripe with all of the TV stuff. Way overpriced.

chyna's avatar

I just bought the Insta Slit package opener, as seen on TV. Does anyone else have this and does it work? It’s supposed to open those plastic wrappings that you can never tear off with your bear hands, teeth, or any other object you may have nearby.

SamIAm's avatar

@chyna: really?! use a good scissor silly!!

PretentiousArtist's avatar

ScamWOW
Just use a regular towel

chyna's avatar

@Samantha_Rae Well, it was just a buck at the dollar store, so I thought I would try it. Of course, the price should clue me in right?

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@chyna that’s the kind of thing I was talking about up there earlier. Unless you have something different that they made better, it’s a piece of crap! Just use a box cutter.

Val123's avatar

So….the slap chop is a POS?? I need to know because I’m thinking of getting one for my husband…well, and me. Yes, a knife works just as well, but I dread having to look forward to cutting things up!

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Val123 If I were you, honey, I’d spend the extra money & get it from Pampered Chef. I couldn’t attest to how well the Slap Chop is made. I’ve had a PC for years & it’s still going strong.

Val123's avatar

@jbfletcherfan Thank you! Yeah, looking at the slap chop they had at Walgreens it just looked like it would fly to pieces the first time you use it!

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Val123 LOLLLL. I don’t doubt it.
