video surveillance?

I agree with @Samantha_Rae. Go to video. Or maybe his friend? You said they were working in a pair? Or let him go, because you can’t do anything???

AGH! Why, oh why do you torture me with these dilemmas? That’s why we pay you honey, and believe me, we appreciate not having to make these calls. :)
::Whew!::

sounds like you are an employee and therefore a witness, if the store wants to press charges then it will be your word against the shoplifter’s. if you are an employee than it’s not up to you what action the store takes and they all get ripped off heavily this time of year cause it’s easy.

@trailsillustrated john65pennington’s a cop, not a shopkeeper. :)

Ok; unless you have Video Survilance ; you are out of gas… since you did not find the item on his person .

There is no way to PROVE beyond a reasonable doubt that HE took the ring…

Security and management should admonish the clerk because as i remember ; ALL cases and sliding doors at a jewelry counter are to be kept locked unless an employee is right there…..

oh oh I see. same. it is up to the store, the security gaurd is still a witness.

No ring on the person = no crime committed. Video surveillance will not help in this situation. He could’ve dropped the ring prior to exiting the store, and that would mean that nothing was stolen, and therefore – no crime committed!

HighShaman's avatar

@gtreyger IF the video survilance showed the guy reaching over the counter and stealing a ring ; then YES ; you have your evidence on tape…. even if no ring was found ; he still stole it and will get prosecuted !

However; without that; there is NOTHING and NO Crime.

Here is the final outcome. you will love this. i arrested this man. i know what i saw. the only reason this man did not have the stolen ring in his hand or in his pocket is this….......he swallowed the ring! i took him to our local General Hospital and had his stomach x-rayed and gues what was shining inside? a stolen mans diamond cluster ring. i took him to jail and he was given a laxative at night. the next morning, kerrpling! one slightly soiled stolen mens diamond cluster ring hit the bed pan in the metro jail. he plead guilty to shoplifting and because of his past criminal record, he was sentenced to 60 days in the workhouse. the morale of this story is this. never swallow a stolen diamond ring and expect to keep it. especially, if old john is on the job.

what do they do with the ring after that? I’m hoping the store just takes the loss? insurance?

Taciturnu's avatar

@john65pennington ::applause:: See? That’s exactly what I mean. Good call!

HighShaman's avatar

@john65pennington VERY GOOD !! It’s a shame he was only given 60 days !!

snap on a rubber glove and do a body cavity check.

monitor his bowel movements for a day or so. I know it’s a sh__ty job, but someone’s got to do it.

@Jayne Look; I wasn’t being “Ridiclous” ; as You put it .

Are you even remotely aware of what SHOPLIFTING cost you and I as consumers each year ?

The fact that this jerk RAN; should be enough for an additional 60 days ; to say the least…

I believe that a FAIR sentence would have been 6 Months , $500 Fine + Court Cost , One year of Supervised Probation upon release , , and a lettter of apology to the store and the officer who chased him down…

More sentences like that ; and we’ll have LESS crime…
