I've heard of animal care services which provide assistance to low-income families with pets. How can I find them?

Asked by drdoombot (8145points) December 23rd, 2009

My dog is acting quite sluggish and limping around painfully (I think it might be all the salt on the ground irritating her paws). She also seems to be smacking her lips and licking them a lot, which I have read is a sign of illness. In any case, I’d like to take her to a vet and get a full checkup. My mother is receiving public assistance in the form of SSI and Medicaid. I’ve been told that there are vets or services that provide financial assistance if you meet these requirements.

Google searches have not been helpful. I’ve contacted the ASPCA, SAVE, AAHA, AVMA and United Animals Nations, but they either don’t provide services beyond spaying/neutering, can only be contacted by vets or are closed for the holidays.

I’d really like to take my dog to the vet today, but to be perfectly honest, my mother doesn’t have the cash to cover it right now. Sometime next week, perhaps, but not at the moment. How can I find a vet or an animal clinic that provides financial help to those on public assistance?

Call the animal hospitals around you and see if any of them are ok with making payments. Especially the animal hospitals that provide emergency care after hours. I know there is one in my area but some areas may not have any. Some may only ask for what you can afford like a donation and some will are ok with payments made monthly. Good Luck

Does your mom have a vet whom she uses consistently? I would think that a vet whom one knows would be glad to extend services and wait a little while for payment, especially this time of year. Just be frank.

Talk to the vet- there are programs they can apply for to get you help.

I would contact your county animal shelter or local SPCA. Here in Sacramento we have programs for low income that are run by the county.

Well, I made a bunch of calls and got nowhere. I took my dog to the vet and got a whopping bill of $270! I’m not sure how I’m going to cover this…

When you get a pet you’ve got to allow for the medical costs. Think of them as your children.
