What song transforms you?

Asked by gemiwing (14718points) December 31st, 2009

Is there a song that transforms you while you listen to it?

Not just a song that you like, or can dance to. One that literally transports you to a different place, emotional or otherwise.

One that you can put on repeat and lose just a little bit of your sanity to. One that when you put it on loud, you become a sort of embodiment of the music. One that you desperately wish no one was around for so you could really get into it.

What song, and how does it change you? Is it a peaceful feeling or do you go kicking and screaming?

My current song is The Reeling by Passion Pit (yeah yeah, I know). It reminds me how far I’ve come from my darker days. It also speaks to me of the future that has to be better than where I’ve been.

Two songs by Sufjan Stevens:
John Wayne Gacy Jr and The dress looks nice on you.

There are also three songs that remind me of this past summer (it was mindblowing):
Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show
Angel From Montgomery by John Prine and finally Seasons of love from Rent

even thinking about these songs makes me smile

@naivete Dream of Flying is one of mine. It’s haunting and I can only listen to it when I’m by myself because it’s so powerful.

ETA- damn, I’m up too late. It’s Alexi Murdoch that does Dream of Flying. I do love me some Sufjan though. I did an art piece to Casimir Polaski Day (lord above if I spelled that right).

I hate to admit it, but Neil Diamond Ive Been Released
Next is Bullfrogs and Butterflies

gemiwing's avatar

@Judi I love Bullfrogs and Butterflies. It’s not transforming for me but I adore it all the same. I can see how it would be a good one to let go with.

Judi's avatar

@gemiwing ; it reminds me that transformation is required and sometimes painful, but beauty awaits us when our transformation is complete.

@Judi Beautiful.
Plus we can all sing it together. It sends me back to childhood.

Amore et Morte from Cradle of Filth.

Everytime I listen to this, I remember and yearn for something I’ve never known.

I don’t understand what you mean by “transform”

Paper Money by the Soulsavers makes me hungry for sex every time. Does that count?

But THIS ONE will be playing when I stroll through the pearly gates of heaven.

gemiwing's avatar

@fundevogel It’s hard to explain. It takes me from wherever I am emotionally or whatever, and moves me to where the song is. It takes me out of my own bogged-down thought/feeling/mood and erases everything. Like a song soul-cleanse.

I can sit here in the living room with ESPNU on. I play a certain song and I’m no longer here in this space. I’m transported to a more… pure emotional place. Either by it triggering a memory or just simply the song grabbing me and taking me on a journey whether I want to or not.

Does that make sense?

It’s not about songs we like, it’s about songs that grab us and transform our experience simply by listening to them.

Just thought of something- the songs that do this make us come unhinged for a moment. Then we’re changed by having embraced that. God this sounds really strange when I type it all out.

@Symbeline for some reason I always assumed Cradle of Filth was too tough for me (like Cannibal Corpse) but that’s not bad. Not my subgenre of choice but not bad at all.

Berserker's avatar

@fundevogel Cradle is indeed loud, chaotic and violent, but it’s also extremely innovative, poetic and beautiful. A lot of their music includes the violin, piano and the organ, so it can be peaceful and relaxing. I’ve never liked Cannibal Corpse much because that band exists for the mere purpose of shock value. But Cradle of Filth is art, and I always feel all happy when people take the time to listen to it. :)

I love all the answers but I think I’m going to kill this question. It’s too close to polling and it’s not covering what I really want to ask. It’s frustrating me.

Great question, and I know what you’re getting at because I feel this way about so many songs. Please don’t kill it, because I would actually like to talk about this. :(

Haleth's avatar

I almost always feel this way about songs that are peaceful, serene, and even a bit dark and ominous. There isn’t just one song, but if I could put it metaphorically I’d say listening to the right song feels like floating on a river. I feel a sense of movement because listening to good music lets me think my most creative thoughts, but I feel grounded and peaceful. Ugh. It’s hard to describe. Right now the song that works for me is At the end of the day by Amon Tobin. He does really unusual stuff with electronic music by slowing down the pace and combining it with elements of jazz.

@Haleth. OK I’ll leave it up for you and your really GA.

“Tiny Dancer”- Elton John/Bernie Taupin. But now it affects me in a very depressing and maudlin way.

Haleth's avatar

So where do you go when music transports you to another place? What is it like?

@gemiwing Thank you!

stranger_in_a_strange_land's avatar

@Haleth I head straight for a bottle of Glenfiddich.

Listen to this- it really moves me. The most beautiful song I’ve ever heard.

@Harold Your enthusiasm made me suspicious. I was completely convinced that link would involve…something else.

@fundevogel – I’m not trying to convert anyone, I just love the song. Take it ot leave it!!
