Can you cry out of only one eye?

Asked by Macaulay (778points) January 2nd, 2010

My right eye tears up nearly nightly. It doesn’t just produce tears like that of a watery eye; they’re full-fledged tears streaming. My left eye barely waters. Can you cry out of just one eye or is this just an irritation?

Sounds like a clogged tear duct.

When it’s 8 below zero, one eye was crying like heck for some reason while shoveling. Yikes

Ah. It’s embarrassing because people think that I’m crying when my right eye is just flowin’. I try to play it off with the good ole sleeve rub, but nothing seems to help it. To be frank, this occurs most intensely when I’m smokin’ hella blunts. Could that be to blame? Maybe this is just my dignity slappin’ the breakfast outta my mouth.

My MIL had this when she was suffering from shingles, and then again after her stroke.

Maybe you should stop with the herb?

@Darwin Really, now? Drawing a line between this and smoking weed? That seems pretty arbitrary. The only possible connection I can imagine is that Visine and other red-away drops can be bad for your eyes, but I’m not sure that that would affect a tear duct in any event. As far as herb itself goes, it’s is supposed to be good for the eyes in some ways – helps glaucoma by relieving pressure on the eyes, or so the NIH says. But again, I’m not sure how much this side-effect could be connected to tear flow. Can you link to some evidence for the connection you’re drawing? My google-fu isn’t turning anything up.

@Macaulay If it is a blocked tear duct (which is apparently rare in adults), it can indicate a bunch of different things. From this site: “In adults, tear ducts may become blocked as a result of a thickening of the tear duct lining, nasal or sinus problems, injuries to the bone and tissues around the eyes (such as the cheekbones), infections, or abnormal growths such as tumors.” So – go see a doctor.

@wildpotato@Macaulay was the one who drew the connection when he said “this occurs most intensely when I’m smokin’ hella blunts. ”

The problem with the blocked tear duct theory is that he isn’t actually trying to weep when the tears come from the one eye. He is actually not intending to cry at all but the one eye persists in leaking, most specifically when he is smoking weed.
