My tulip bulbs are already germinating. What should I do?

Asked by vodkawilldo (23points) January 8th, 2010

I planted tulip bulbs a few weeks ago for them to bloom in the spring, but some of them are already germinating. I live in San Francisco and am sure we will have at least a couple of more near-frost weather coming before the spring, and I don’t want them to die from it. What should I do?

I don’t think there’s anything you can do. They’ll get killed back a time or two. If they’re nice healthy bulbs with lots of stored energy, they’ll be fine.

Cover them up with straw, pretty deep, to protect from frost. Take it off gently when other people’s tulips are up. Yours will be paler and weaker, but soon they’ll recover.

With our mild weather some bulbs will come up only to get snuffed when it rains or gets cold, leave them alone so the leaves can gather energy while they are up but then if they get snuffed and turn brown cut them off- Add mulch at that time!

A cold spell will stop them in their tracks.
