When you take a quiz on a website, they ask for your cellphone number. Why is this?

So that they can add a number to their list that they sell to telemarketers.

Because the quiz is just a way for them to charge a whole bunch of money to your cell phone bill. Don’t be surprised if they ask you to respond to their txt via another txt back with numbers in, and there is tiny, tiny print that says “by responding you grant us the right to charge you $4 /month for the next 12 months for “entertainment texts”!

Don’t ever give a quiz your cellphone number. It’s a scam.

Maybe so that they can harass you with phone calls trying to get you to buy things you don’t care about. Maybe you actually do care about them, though. Who knows? Either way, they are most likely after your money in some way or other. Don’t give in. Oh, and if you give in to the ones that require only an e-mail address, make another e-mail address where you don’t mind getting spam if you haven’t already. I just use an old one for things like that if I want to get points in a game. It’s littered with spam, so I just don’t care anyway.

They want to have permission to market to your cell phone. By agreeing to provide your cell phone number, you are agreeing to accept marketing offers, for which you will be charged. Getting rid of the calls may take several phone calls and texts; the process for being removed is not always easy to access. By law they have to remove you if you request it, but getting to the correct number to be removed may not be simple.
