What is the difference between opening your heart, and opening your mind?

Asked by Holden_Caulfield (1139points) January 9th, 2010

Is there a difference between being open hearted and open minded? Do the two coincide or are they at oppostiion to one another? Which one puts us on the “right path”?!?

What an interesting question – I think these are not one and the same but either can help the other along – in that if your heart feels for someone, it is easier to open your mind to their situation or their beliefs – I think that when we feel genuine emotion from another, even if we don’t agree, we are more likely to say ‘okay, we don’t agree, but they’re a good person’. When you have an open mind, it is easier to open your heart to people that everyone else has turned away from – in my life, this pathway occurs more often…generally speaking, because I have an open mind, I share my life with people others consider to be the fray of society…and my heart has been all the better for it.

-Opening your heart = more on sentiment, social, and instinct consideration
-Opening your mind = more on knowledge and common senses.

We use both to decide something.

Opening your heart is to let down the walls and let people have a peek. It is a willingness to experience people. Opening your mind is giving up engraved forever opinions for a few moments at least, and to view the world with fresh eyes. It is a willingness to experience knowledge.

The difference is that by opening your mind you allow another’s point of view in but aren’t necessarily changed by that view.

By opening your heart you allow another person’s heart in and some of your love to spill out and you can’t help but be changed by that.

The two are connected in that the mind is the gatekeeper to the heart. If you can’t get past someone’s mental reservations you may never get to their heart.

We have both for a reason. That being between the two of them they outline the right path and try to keep us on track.

There is a big difference. opening ones mind suggests learning techniques. old dog, new tricks, etc. opening ones heart suggests feelings and emotions.

The human body is amazing.

I think the ideal would be to be both open-hearted and open-minded. For me, being open-minded is easier. it comes naturally to me, while being open-hearted is something that I struggle with.

That is: as I define ope’hearted, which is ready to embrace everyone with love and acceptance.

You have to open your mind before your heart opens.

Well, doing either usually results in death. I’d advise against them.

@Joe That was succinct and very funny.

Of course, the locus of both types of behavior is the brain. It seems odd that we seldom do both at the same time. If we could both be receptive to people and empathise and still consider alternative viewpoints from our own, imagine what we could accomplish!

We can actually do both simultaneously – they are not mutually exclusive!

Different parts of the brain. Agree with @Flo_Nightengale that the mind must be open before the “heart” part can be. It is very possible for the “heart” side to be closed with the intellectual side functioning.
