Does Vegemite go bad?

Asked by rangerr (15765points) January 10th, 2010

My uncle brought us a few jars of Vegemite holy crap, it’s good when he was on a trip to Australia. We have two left, and there’s a date on the bottom of the jar, but it’s not legible.

How long can it last?

I’d go to a store here, but apparently it’s not sold around here.

It’s bad to begin with.

Taste it. It can’t be that bad.
The only food I ever heard of that can’t really spoil is honey.

It’ll keep for months even after opening, and you don’t need to keep it refrigerated. In fact it’s better if you don’t.

you’d never know if it did.

Just looking at what’s in the standard ingredients, I don’t think it would, at least not quickly or easily considering all the salt. So long as it’s been air tight and kept in a cool, dark, space I’d think it’s worth the experiment of opening and tasting.

Unless it’s obviously changed color/smell (it might still be ok, but may not taste like it used to) or winks at you when you open the cupboard (run!) give it a shot.

pdworkin you’ve got THAT right. Worst-tasting stuff I ever put in my mouth.

One of Michael Pollan’s new rules (along with not eating any cereal that changes the colour of milk) is not to eat anything that doesn’t grow mold on the counter after two days.

I just bought a jar last week and the use by date is Nov 2010. I’ve never had a jar around long enough for it to go off, I think it’s safe to eat if it was brought in the last 12 months.
Enjoy!
