Serious question: what does a billion dollars mean to you?

Asked by Austinlad (16323points) January 18th, 2010

When I was young, a million dollars was a LOT of money, but nowadays, it’s a billion dollars for this, a hundred billion dollars for that, so that the cost of things like fixing the economy, helping Haiti, corporate bonuses, etc. has become (at least for me) incomprehensible. Have you ever pondered what a billion dollars means in more familiar terms?

Too much money for me to actually comprehend.

To give a sense of how much money is spent and where, because we all have trouble visualizing big numbers.

Warning: may induce nausea upon looking at the cost of the war compared to money needed to feed every child for a year. Do not operate heavy machinery after reading this diagram. Consult your doctor if you have any unreported side-effects.

Not much. In this economic climate one would be lucky not to lose it. I have learnt that it’s what you can do that counts, not how much you have. Fortunes come and go and friends with it. So really it’s just a pile of trouble.

a billion is a lot.
used in corruption, it gets used up in an instant, but used within wisdom and love , it could take care of just about everything.

Investments in property, people and education. I’d build water purification plants, green energy plants, plants millions of trees. Loans to small businesses that the banks won’t even look at. Endangered animals preservation. Tithe. Stop GMF companies from taking over the planet and hurting the hard-working folks trying to survive.

Oh, and have a holiday.

Lots of wheat beer and a good chunk of coastline to call my own! I am quite familiar with the wheat beer part and would have to look into the current price per foot of Carolina coastline.

It’s worth noting that the dollar has decreased in value by about 95% since 1913; a billion dollars isn’t anywhere near what it used to be. A modern $1,000,000,000 is more like $50,000,000

The Yankees, the Cowboys and almost enough to buy Manchester United.

Loose change for Bill Gates.

why, a billion assassins.

DominicX's avatar

It means a ton. The fact that Bill Gates has a net worth of around $50 billion is insane. You can have $1 billion or even less and be set for life (or multiple lives). $50 billion is just so much money. But even more incomprehensible to me is a trillion dollars. How can we have a debt of $12 trillion?!!!

It means I have the power to literally change the world in a big way when utilized properly. Money is only good when you can use it to change peoples lives and improve overall happiness. Otherwise, whats the point of even being rich when you are not happy with yourself.

markyy's avatar

It means I lose a lot of responsibilities, but gain even more.

A drop in the bucket when we talk about debts of nations like the US, UK or Germany. Our grandchildren won’t like it. Today’s debts are tomorrow’s taxes.

@mattbrowne
The funniest (and most tragic) part about the US’s national debt is that approximately a third of it is from different federal agencies borrowing from each other. That’s about 4 trillion dollars that we don’t actually owe, but will continue to fret about.
