How can I find out what career path I should take?

Asked by disturbed_broken (756points) January 18th, 2010 from iPhone

I have no clue what to do when I’m finished with high school.
I have taken a bunch of career and personality tests and they all say the same thing.
Social services worker and counselor.
I wanted to be a school guidance counselor but I have too many issues so I kind of thought I should forget about that.
I’m so confused how can I find out what I want to do?
I want to find out before grade 10 registration so I know what to take.

Yeah sorry I bumped my iPod as I was writing and went to fix it and you replied so I couldn’t.

Personally, I think it’s a bit early to decide what you want to spend the rest of your life doing. College is a place where people learn enough about themselves to decide what they want to do with their life, but most people change majors several times throughout college, and then careers several times once they graduate from there. It’s a bit ridiculous to ask somebody what they want to do with their life while they are still in high school. For now, focus on the basics, and try not to feel pressured into taking one path or another. Just do what you like best. Most of all, don’t let some general survey of your interests tell you what you should and should not do.

English tutor?

You don’t know that you can’t get things together and do well in high school and line yourself up for a worthwhile and rewarding future. Just focus on developing your basic skills in math, science and English and you will have a whole range of choices for college.

Aren’t you worried about passing math? Do that first. You can decide what you want to be when you are 20 something and have just worked somewhere if necessary. Let your life flow a bit, you seem too worried.

@faye
yes I am working on the math and am going to pass by the end of the year for sure now…hopefully.
Yes I worry to much about everything and I just want to kind of get an idea of what I’m going to do with my life.

I recommend two books (I have the same problem at 24 and have found both useful):

The Pathfinder by Nicolas Lore

(he has another version of this book written for people under 30 which may be easier reading)

and Do What You Are by Barbara Baron (sp?)

The first one explains why personality “typing” is only one piece of the puzzle in choosing a career, and it helps you work through all the pieces in making a decision. The second one is all about personality types. It also contains extensive lists of careers that each type may prefer. Both should be available at the local library (at least they are at mine).

There are other possibilities beyond what is listed. The key is to understand why the listed careers are a good match for your type, then you can apply this reasoning to other careers that may require similar skills or match your preferences.

If you can get good scholarships to pay for university, do it. There is more free money for the taking for high school seniors than any other group, so take advantage if you can. If not, and you’re not sure about careers, take some time to get to know yourself better (I find that I know myself much better now than when I was leaving high school), explore different career options by interning or taking odd jobs to gain exposure to an industry, maybe take some general courses at a community college. Once you figure it out, then go for it. If you’re uncertain about your future while enrolled at a 4-year university you are just wasting money – not bad if it is someone else’s not so fun if it is yours.

My final piece of advice is don’t forget about work environment. If you hate being indoors now, chances are you’ll hate being indoors ten years from now and you’ll hate having a desk job in an office.

If you have other specific questions, feel free to PM me. I have just spent the last several months thinking about careers an exploring my options so all this stuff is fresh in my mind.

If you wish to be a counselor then follow your dream.

Your issues now (and how you will overcome them) will be an asset to those you will be interacting with in your chosen path.

So set your eyes on the goal and overcome your own demons so that you can help others overcome theirs.

I took the JVIS
but I took it a job placement center. It was pretty accurate. I do wish I had taken it before college though. Maybe it will benefit you more : )
