Why do people talk louder on a cellphone?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) January 27th, 2010

Wife and i have been in restaurants, when people receive a cellphone call. you can hear their conversation throughout the entire restaurant. why do some people just about yell, while talking on a cellphone? some people talk so loud that they can be heard without a cellphone. why is this?

I think some people don’t trust their phones or maybe have had communication problems and just talk loud do they don’t have to keep repeating themselves. That’s just my guess, and if so, they need to get a different phone.

Because reception sucks.

My guess, and it is only that, is there may be ambient noise that makes it hard for them to hear the incoming call. It gives the auditory illusion that they must speak louder to be heard. Not logical, but I think that’s the way it works.

HankMoody, good answer. how would you feel if i came over to your table and ask you to hold down the loud conversation, that you were disturbing the other people?

@john65pennington , If you asked me politely I would apologise and talk softly. Or go outside, but it’s not rudeness on most people’s part, it’s just lack of self awareness.

John65Pennington – I don’t think it’s rude to tell others to turn down the level of their conversation when the setting calls for it. This goes for restaurants and cell phone users. Imagine going on a date with the expectation that the restaurnat your going to has a romantic setting. Your sitting, eating, drinking, and all of a sudden someoen starts harping on their cell breaking your concentration and stealing your attention. Not cool. Telling someone to turn it down is more than appropriate!

What first comes to mind is the original use of “Can you hear me now?!” as in the “reception wasn’t good so I moved over here hoping that you can hear me NOW!
Next what comes to mind is that the background noise is making it tough to hear.

But these are legitimate excuses for people talking loudly in PRIVATE settings. My feeling is that most people who are so rude as to talk loudly in a public location are, unless there is a true emergency situation that they’re so upset about that they are frozen and can’t move to a more private location, too self-absorbed to be self-conscious or concerned with others.

I think a large part of the problem is that cell use has become so prevalent, pervasive, & constant that people just make & receive calls without considering their surroundings (I can’t count how many times cells phones start ringing loudly during movies & church service!)

In order not to chance a confrontation with someone that might escalate, you might want to speak with someone else, such as a waiter or restaurant manager, who can talk with the offending person with some, for lack of a better word, “authority” as well as professional tact.

My dad is the same way, he literally yells into the phone. He tells me, that the reception sucks, but the reception in the house is great. I tell him he needs hearing aids.
Now when we go out to dinner, I confiscate his phone, because I don’t feel like being embarrassed.

Man was talking loud in a restaurant to his cellphone carrier about his bill. i went to his table and placed my finger to my mouth and went shhhhhhhhh. man takes off for the mens restroom and continues his loud conversation, this time using profanity. i go into restroom. he is sitting on the commode and could still be heard by children in restaurant. i politely began flushing all the commodes, the urinals, and the two hand dryers. this ended his conversation.

Old persons speak loud on their cell phones because they cannot hear what the other person says. Still, there are old phones which don’t work good well and you have to speak loud.
I always argue with my father not to yell in the phone, but he is used to talk like that. He tells me that he cannot hear anything, even I know it’s not true.

I think the most important question is “Why do people talk on their cell phones in restaurants”? It’s hard for me to think of something more annoying.

Nullo's avatar

A lot of people don’t understand how receptive the microphone is.

@john65pennington That would be a-ok and I would understand that I had been a jackass. But that’s just me.

“A lot of people don’t understand how receptive the microphone is.”
