Has anyone any good smoked mackerel recipes?

Asked by ModernEpicurian (1638points) February 3rd, 2010

I’ve got some smoked mackerel. I bought it with a fish pie in mind, however I forgot about it and ate the other fish I bought.

So I was just wondering whether any of the other Flutherites had any brilliant (but fiendishly simple) recipes that you could bestow upon me?

How about as a sandwich on a bagel with butter or cream cheese and onions and/or tomatoes?

@janbb: A lox on both your houses for getting here first.

@ModernEpicurian; or just spread on a bland cracker. Smoked fish can stand alone, like the cheese. Do you do your own smoking? Smoked lake trout is also a delicacy.

I grew up eating smoked white fish right out of the fish. One avoided the head, tail and bones.

Here is Smoked Mackeral Dip:

Smoke Mackerel Dip

This is my version. There are lots of other great ones.

4 pounds approx. smoked Mackerel crumbled coarsely

1 cup slice green onions

½ cup dice celery

½ cup soften cream cheese

½ cup sour cream

1 package dry ranch dressing mix.

Throw the first five ingredients in a large bowl and blend it all together, clean hands is the best mixer. Sprinkle the dressing mix over it all and mix again. If the smoked fish is properly seasoned, no extra seasoning is required. A little mayo can be added if the fish was smoked a bit dry. The dip should be a little stiff, but should spread with a little difficulty. If you want it to spread more easily, add mayo and/or sour cream.

This is a lovely recipe. I’ve made it many times:-

225g smoked mackerel fillets, skin peeled off;
100g soft cream cheese;
½ lemon, juice and grated zest;
8 slices of thick-sliced wholemeal bread;
4 tomatoes, cut into wedges;
bag of baby leaf salad.

Recipe Method
Flake the fish fillets into a processor and add the cream cheese, lemon juice and zest. Pulse until combined (keep mixture quite rough rather than smooth). Spoon the pate onto serving plates.

Toast the bread until golden, cut into triangles and serve with the pate, tomatoes and salad leaves.

Enjoy!!

Here in Florida if you cant grill it you smoke it.

I find the best thing to do with smoked fish besides just eat it all by itself is…
Do what you do when making tuna salad. Except use the smoked fish instead of the tuna.
