Why are politics so complicated?

Asked by Fred931 (9434points) March 2nd, 2010

I have no idea what to think about it other than I’m having a very hard time understanding it.

They seem to involve many different things and they seem to be played out in front of us yet we don’t have direct control over what happens. Imagine many kittens waiting for some bits of cat food that not everyone likes.

What aspect of it? It’s complicated because in politics there’s multiple ways to do things and multiple ways to implement things, and you can’t please everyone.

It is because so many people use politics for so many things. Lately, of course, they are used to keep the people with the least in line. Or maybe they have always been used to that end.

For you to not be involved. Also to not notice how inefficient they are.
Because the current design simply does not work. Not for societies of this size, or generally.

Think of an individual. Think of how complex an individual is. No one person is 100% like another. They all look different, have a different personality, different ideas etc. Each person has unique tastes, desires and moral ideals.

If one individual is that complex, think of an entire nation of individuals, each with different goals and ideals. That is going to get complicated in a matter of seconds when these individual come together and try to reach an agreement. Blow this understanding up to an international scale and we have more then we can handle.

And then there is the fact that many people are to proud to listen or compromise, which lead to political clashing.

Because no one can agree on anything.

People get so much of their ego and emotion involved in defending and promoting their political beliefs that they will believe and repeat any damaging falsehood about those with opposing political beliefs. Facts are discarded or denied in favour of undermining any beliefs or facts that conflict with theirs.

In such an environment, it is difficult to understand the actual issues and to decide which political views are worthy of support.

Politics is like sorting a basket of unmatched socks….SOOoooo confusing and frustrating but you just have to knuckle down and do it. Just take the time to learn yourself so you can make up your own mind….forget what your SO says or thinks…you decide for yourself.

@Cruiser Fluther is my SO! I don’t ask you to decide for me, but I hope y’all can break things down so I can understand them. I just said this on another thread. I just can’t take the time to get any more informed, all my energy is going to schooling.

What I can figure out is that pissing around the bush is a detrimental factor to be a good politician.
Veiling deceit and bullshit is a fine art.

Your problem is like this question. You need to ask more pointed questions to start somewhere. This is too general.
Why are politics so complicated?
Because organizations are complex. Because people are complex. Because some people obscure the truth behind agendas….and on and on.

So many people! All talking! in principle, a good thing.

I had to train myself to understand each sentence I was reading in the newspaper before I went on to the next one. It took me years to get a sense of flow. My grasp and my intuition developed over time. When I was in my teens, I just
turned my back. I knew I couldn’t hold my own, I knew I wasn’t ready.

I love it when very young people have a grasp. Though some of us take awhile,
I think it’s worth it. It may seem hopeless, but the truth is that if we inform ourselves, talk to each other, say no to abuse, the community does develop. But it’s slow.

Political Parties are the problem world wide – usually made up of a few people with their own interests in mind, and then they want the general public to vote for them.
The party gets into power and serves itself.

Fact from fiction truth from diction. Politics us hard to understand because it is run mostly by a horde of egomaniacs who care more about their own place in history than doing what is best for the people. The longer they stay in office the better they have on becoming a household name. Why would someone spend millions of their own money for a job that pays them fractions of what they earn in their civilian life. The ideal they can be some shot caller for the greater populace. It is like 20 people trying to decide toppings for a pizza and they can’t agree on one that works because others they want to take a piece back don’t like something else and they don’t care to compromise because they feel those they promised pizza to will be mad because they did not get what they wanted and fire the pizza wrangler; the politician.

If politics were just about facts, it would be easy. Find out the right facts, make your decisions based on them, and repeat as needed.

If politics were just about people, it would be harder, but still not so bad. Find the right psychological salve, the right marketing campaign, or the right bribe, and apply liberally to the population.

But it’s not. It’s about both. You have to balance, apparently, true facts and feel-good fuzzies in a way that everyone (or at least a majority) can support, and that no one outright despises. Good luck with that one! The more inter-relationships there are between facts, fallacies, people, agendas, interests, business, etc., the more complex they become. It’s like an ecosystem – what’s good for one interest is usually bad for another interest. Which interest wins? That’s politics – deciding who wins when every win is a loss somewhere else.

@Trillian I feel for you there…I guess if you trust the group or person go for it. My world is pretty exact and that being said it is easy for me to see what works best for me any my interests.

Because a hidden agenda requires a political veil spun from the silkiest lies and embroidered by the finest bullshit artist money can buy.
