If you saw Jesus what ethnicity do you think he would most closely resemble?

Asked by Ltryptophan (12091points) March 28th, 2010

There have been shows about this. In them I have noticed there are attempts to portray Jesus as looking more like modern arabic peoples than caucasians. I think that is plausible. I would not presume to know what all the peoples of that region some 2000 years ago would have looked like. Iranians seem to look pretty caucasian to me, for instance.

Well, from where I’m standing, in my room’s dim lighting, he looks a bit pale.

AmbeJL's avatar

well, he definitely wasn’t blonde and blue eyed.

thriftymaid's avatar

He was a Judean Hebrew; I would expect his appearance to be closely related to that of the Jewish race.

If a Jesus/Jesu/Joshua were actually born where posited he would most likely be Semitic/Hamitic. If there was travel across deserts from such places as Ethiopia, it is possibly his family could have looked Berber [but that is not a “race”]. He would look likee the peoples of the region 2000 years ago.

@rpmpseudonym time to sell that as a collectible on eBay. Do his pics look the same in the bible you got as a child?
All the pictures in my childhood bible look like a psychiatrist I saw many years ago. He was a red-headed, blue-eyed, bearded Ashkenazi Jew. So go figure.

Ltryptophan's avatar

Ok, what specific charactersitics do you think he might possess? Pale skin? Dark curly hair? Blue eyes?

anartist's avatar

Ohmigod, WHY?

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

@anartist I think the joke was lost. Intention was that he was standing in the room with me. I have no pictures of the guy, nore a bible. Not a religious person.

Pretty_Lilly's avatar

He would look like the drummer for “Grand Funk Railroad”

Bluefreedom's avatar

He might very well resemble this guy right here.

anartist's avatar

@rpmpseudonym I am a bit of a “believing child” and that includes too much literalism . . .

Ltryptophan's avatar

Could he have been black?

Pretty_Lilly's avatar

@Bluefreedom I believe that’s his high school grad picture !

anartist's avatar

@Bluefreedom your link looks just like my shrink!
—don’t know how to do those link thangs!

See ref to Berber for the closest link to Black—would most likely have been northeastern African if any “Black”—Egyptian, Ethiopean etc, dark, thin, tall, sharp featured

Bluefreedom's avatar

@Pretty_Lilly, Nice one. I’d like to know who he took to the prom.

anartist's avatar

His wife, now a ballerina with a DC dance company [and she smokes]

anartist's avatar

@Ltryptophan Are you trying to prove “Jesus was Black”? Why not model him on The Lion of Judah?

Ltryptophan's avatar

@anartist I think He gets a lot of different skin colors, but I think he probably looked on the order of Netanyahu. Or like your normal white guy. Or white jew if you like.

Pretty_Lilly's avatar

@Bluefreedom Mary Madgdalene of course but she had a reputation of sneaking under the bleachers even back then !!

meagan's avatar

Tan Jim Morrison?

Arisztid's avatar

I would not be surprised if he was colored something like this boy or this adult photographed in modern Jerusalem.

ETpro's avatar

He must have been polymorphic. Whatever time and culture is painting pictures of him, he looks pretty much like their ideal man in their pictures. Travel through Israel and the Middle East and you won’t see many people looking like the picture @Bluefreedom linked too. Those who do are not natives, but Caucasians.

Dr_C's avatar

My first name is Jesus. I am of Spanish and French descent. My parents were born in Mexico. So every time I see Jesus in the mirror he seems like a very light skinned, tall, dark and amazingly handsome Hispanic man.

anartist's avatar

@Dr_C you sound so terrific I am disappointed that all I see is this little ivory sphere on a yellow background! When is your next Playgirl centerfold?

Arisztid's avatar

Now @Dr_C , be careful that you can fit your head through the doorway. ;)

DarkScribe's avatar

This is what he would really have looked like.

(That should freak out the white supremacists.)

ETpro's avatar

@DarkScribe Saw a lot of people looking like that when I visited Israel.

ZEPHYRA's avatar

@DarkScribe , now that should get all the “beauty contestant” judges up and fluttering!!!!!

DarkScribe's avatar

@ETpro Saw a lot of people looking like that when I visited Israel.

Well, he was King of the Jews.

Dr_C's avatar

@Arisztid funny you should mention that… at 6’8” hitting my head is a common issue…

ragingloli's avatar

He would look like Emperor Palpatine.

plethora's avatar

Are we sure he is not a white guy in a business suit?

Ria777's avatar

@ragingloli: Emperor Palpatine with a hooked nose. you know, because of the Jewish genes.

Brian1946's avatar

According to the Bethlehem Enquirer, he put on a lot of weight, wore a mullet, and looked like Billy Ray Cyrus in his later years. :-)

Mikelbf2000's avatar

It’s not an issue to me. To any true Christian he will still be the messiah no matter what ethnicity he is.

ucme's avatar

If I saw him the last thing i’d be wondering was what his ethnic background may be.More like shitting myself at seeing a ghost of an imaginary prophet.

CMaz's avatar

He would look like this

ucme's avatar

God bless those chocolate salty balls.Amen brother.

davidbetterman's avatar

He would most closely resemble a human being from the planet earth…

anartist's avatar

@DarkScribe‘s picture is not unlike the image of Haile Selassie [except that Selassie was probably a lot taller 2 millennia later] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Selassie_restored.jpg which suggests an African influence on the Semiticn population of Judea [seems that Moses brought some new Jews to the gene pool]

Joybird's avatar

@ChazMaz hahahaha…I love it! I just drew up a tat for someone and we used Daniel Lazaro, Neo Anderson (the model, not the Matrix), Didier, and Rick Fox as the models for the depiction of Jesus. I don’t know if the real man had dreads…but the one I drew did. So there you have it…he looked like Rick Fox…sort of. (Don’t I wish)
