Does the "early bird catch the worm?"?

Asked by Just_Justine (6511points) March 30th, 2010

I am pretty spoilt at work, I am allowed to come and go as I please. Sometimes I do not spill out of bed until 8am or 9am for example. Of course I do my job, and work hard else they would probably kick my ass out.

But do you think the early bird does catch the worm? I have decided to start a whole new routine, I am up and it is 4am! I think it is time for change, however why bother if it does not add value to my life? Any thoughts? Like does it work for you?

Last time I went out really early this winter, all I caught was a clod. :-(

The early bird is the sucka. The only thing better about it is you skip traffic. But I get to work ever day 15–20 mins early. The only thing I’ve ever gotten for it is that my boss said “thanks for coming in early all the time” once. My two colleagues come in 30 mins late, consistently.

They still get all their work done, and if they need a little time, they stay a little later. But do I think my boss will give me any better of an appraisal or recommendation? No. In fact, I know the answer is no.

So the only time the early bird catches the worm is when he is early to a door buster sale.

@mrrich724 darn! Possibly how we spend the time is important. I can see a early work out regime being the answer yawn

But the later mouse gets the cheese!

The only time this may work out is when your job hunting. Then it may be a good idea to be the first one in the door. Otherwise people just take you for granted. I had a job where I could either take the 6 to 2 pm shift or the 10 to 6 shift. I don’t know how many times I got screwed because the 10 people would not show up and I would be stuck till 4 till they could find a replacement for me. People coming in at 10 would never answer their phones and come in for the 6 am people when they called out.

It works for me during hunting season, other than that I don’t get up any earlier than I have to.

The early bird does get the worm.

Personally, I don’t like worms, so who cares?

@PnL dam! @Pandora this is not looking good at all !! back to bed? Maybe I find it so thrilling because I am so not a morning person. There has to be something good about it surely??

@Just_Justine, sure there is. You’ll have loads of energy for a while and then by 12 you’ll feel like your batteries where pulled out and you’ll drag for a few hours till you get your second wind. Only it won’t last long and you’ll go to bed by 8 pm.

Yes, it does. When I compare all the people in my life who are habitually running late, and behind on things to the people who are early and prepared, it’s easy to see that the people who run late are way more stressed. On contrast, the people who always show up early seem more at peace, and are generally more successful. Again, this is just a comparison of the people in my life, I’m sure there are plenty of exceptions.

What Would Bill Gates Do?

Just_Justine's avatar

@chamelopotamus GA. So what would he do or should I google it?

WestRiverrat's avatar

@chamelopotamus He would hire a team to work 24/7 to catch the worm for him.

Actually, if he’s eating undercooked pork he’ll get more than just one.

Yes. But in your case 4AM, i feel that is too early. And if you don’t have any specific plan on how to utilize time properly it will be even worse.

You have lot of advantage if you are early.

* Its calm, no noise, no disturbance. You can concentrate well. Early morning is the best time for meditation for ex.
* No traffic, as someone pointed it. You save 10mins at-least.
* Of course. In the case of stock market, you can kind of predict how the markets will be in western countries as we have the outcome of eastern countries.
* Just because you have more time, you will plan to do something with that.

But do you think the early bird does catch the worm?
For me, yes, I find I get noticeably more done and also seem to be more motivated to do it and thereby have more free time to do whatever. It does impact me in that I go to bed earlier, but somehow that seems to balance out better than getting up late and going to bed late; likely because of the added motivation when I’m up early.

why bother if it does not add value to my life?
exactly, change for the sake of change, simply begets more change. Give it a try, if it fits keep it, if you find it’s causing more problems than it solves, drop it.

Perhaps the early bird does get the worm, but this bird would rather sleep in and eat fruit instead. :-)

Yes, but there again you know what happens to the early worm!
