What instrument is this?

Asked by jdogg (871points) April 3rd, 2010 from iPhone

This video is a clip of the game FFX in the cloister trials. At 0:24–0:35 is this instrument that has a clicking sound to it. I think it’s Japanese. Anyone know what it is? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S05einNddSY&feature=youtube_gdata

It’s not a real instrument it’s the midi version of a string orchestra performing in pizzicato.

Aren’t you just listening to a synthesizer?
Same sort of music was used in the game Myst

Actually, after listening to more of it I heard what you were most likely talking about (the more quiet but fast strumming in the background). That sounds like a midified Chinese Pipa.

Really though, it doesn’t have to be a real instrument since it is synthesized.

it may be synthesized but I know there’s an instrument that sounds just like it. I mat be wrong but I think the instrument was featured in the second Pirates of the Carribean score.

fastly played shamisen? I have the midi for the entire song and I looked under instrument list and it said “shamisen” for the fast clicky type instrument, sound right?

Yeah, shamisen is pretty common in midi applications. Shamisen

I would agree with some type of synthesized shamisen.
