What do women carry in those humongous purses?

Asked by MarcoNJ (946points) April 5th, 2010

So I’m at the park with my wife and kids. The kids are off playing while the Misses and I are on the park bench conversing and enjoying the tranquility of it all. Later, I notice two women walk up – both sporting those super-sized purses that have been in season for a while. I never paid it much thought before, but I’m kind of curious now. So, what exactly is all that room for?

Where else can they put their toy-boys? They are “Cougar Caches”.

My wife carrys one big enough to lose her notebook computer in it. “Damn – I know it’s in here somewhere…”

sweetteaindahouse's avatar

It depends on what you need. If you would like a refrigerator, microwave, or a minibike, just ask a woman with a large purse and I’m sure they will have one in there somewhere.

On a serious note, make-up, check book, trash, tampons, snacks, brush/comb, glasses, and pretty much anything else that is small enough to fit in one. Either all of that stuff or just a bunch of empty space because the purse is for looks and not practicality.

Smaller purses.

They’re filled with shoes silly.

Lots and lots of stuff.

Currently in my oversized bag of mystery and magic I have:

Wallet
Glasses
Pens
Book x 2
Medication
Lip gloss
Make up
Paint Brush
Scissors
receipts x 10000
Stapler
and glue
...............why the stapler and glue, Im not sure, I was actually surprised to find them there myself.

Actually I think in a way its a small sample of your room….the more of your room you can fit in your bag, the better.

Women need things to feel safe and prepared…... I mean who knows when I’ll need a stapler?

You guys have a great sense of humor. I was joking with my wife, saying “I bet she has a roll of toilet paper in there. Maybe a pair of shoes. Or a whole change of outfit. A blow dryer. A pillow.”

But I definitely appreciate the honest answers as well. Thank you. Puts things into perspective for me.

Vunessuh's avatar

I have my phone, my wallet, a few pens, lipgloss and some meds. The rest of the space is just filled with air, I guess.

@Violet Wow! If I ever decide to climb Mt Everest, I’m definitely taking you along!

Whatever is in there they will likely use it to knock the shit out of you if you make them angry. Ever been stabbed with an eyelash curler?

I’ve often wondered the same thing. I am the exception to the rule, since I don’t wear make-up, I carry everything I could possibly need in my fanny pack, and have for as long as I can remember.

Keysha's avatar

Let me tell you what we do. My sister, her husband, two kids, and I were at an amusement park a few years ago. She and I both had largish ‘fanny pack’ purses on, both mostly empty. My brother in law ragged on us for needing them, when ‘guys just use their pockets’.

First roller coaster, (emptying pockets and handing to wife) “hold these for me, I don’t want them to fall out of my pockets.” (did not take anything back but wallet).

First water ride, (handing wife glasses, wallet (as he did every ride), and some trinket he bought) “hold these, don’t want them wet.”

Kids, of course, handing both of us things to ‘stick in your purse for me, so I don’t have to carry it,’ By the time we were done that day, two women with ‘don’t know why you have such big purses’ that were less than half full, each, had them so jammed full that it was a trial to put anything in them and zip them.

We got home, emptied out of the purses anything not ours and were back to half empty purses, nothing new in either of them that was ours.

Oh, and he still did not know why we had such big purses.

Moral of the story: Before looking into a woman’s overlarge purse, make sure you do not need her to be your pack mule.

My daughter carries the following in her purse. Make-up (lipstick, blush, eyeshadow). Inhaler, wallet, work ID, car keys, house keys, tissue, small curling Iron (?), toothbrush, female stuff, hand lotion, hair gel, hand sanitary gel, computer cables, flash drive (work related) and sometimes she has cotton gloves (again work related) money, and change.
@Joey Lmao, reciepts x 10000 . You’ve been looking in my purse. :/
I don’t have half the stuff my daughter has but I walk around with asprins, allergy pill, and anti acid pills for upset stomach. And sometimes I carry stuff that my husband doesn’t want to stuff in his pockets.

Everything but the kitchen sink

Arisztid's avatar

I shall testify to @Keysha ‘s comment. Into her purse goes my:
1) wallet
2) keys
3) miscellaneous set of medical gloves that sometimes magically appear there even when I am not at work (I think it is habit that I grab a couple)
4) change

It is just so much easier to stuff them in her purse when we are out and about. I just never get around to taking anything back until we get home.

Wallet, keys, pocket calendar, 2 pens, lipstick, lip balm, nail file, dental floss, lots of different kinds of pills, fold up scissors, tape measure, super glue, little leather pouch with store credit cards, hand lotion, hand sanitizer, “fajita pinchers”, nail clippers, kleenex, gum, & tweezers.

I used to get made fun of at work for all the stuff I carry, but if someone needed something out of the ordinary, who did they come to? Moi.

Keysha's avatar

@Arisztid Don’t forget the allergy meds, medical tape, gauze pads, your watermelon Bubblicious gum (yes, Flutherites, Aris is hooked on watermelon Bubblicious), and the occasional tourniquet strap.

Arisztid's avatar

@Keysha Guilty as charged.

Trillian's avatar

@Keysha Hehehehe! Eeeeeaaawwwwww! Eeeeeeeeeaaaawwwww! The least they could do after loading it down is offer to carry it for a while. I have one shoulder permanently higher than the other! Aren’t they cute when they’re at that age?

Arisztid's avatar

@Trillian Well, she already has so much stuff in there, my little contributions are not much. I do not usually have medical tape in my pocket, just things that I automatically grab without remembering that I am not on my way to work. Now medical gloves… who knows when those will come in handy.

Keysha's avatar

@Trillain I don’t mind Aris doing it to me, he never treats me like a mule. His is more an absentminded extra pocket that is bigger than his. When I hand it all back, he does thank me, and look a bit shamefaced.

Pandora's avatar

This reminds me of a show where people would be picked to be a contestant if they named an item and you had it in your purse. Maybe that is what really started it. Can’t remember the name of the show.

Keysha's avatar

@Pandora Let’s Make a Deal!

chyna's avatar

If I was on Lets Make a Deal, I’d want @j0ey‘s purse with me. For sure they’d ask for a stapler.

Captain_Fantasy's avatar

I don’t understand that. I walk around with everything I need in my pockets.
Then I see women walking down the street with a bag that looks like she could fit a sleeping bag in it. How much crap do you really need to carry around with you?

Seriously, you don’t need that much stuff and I dont appreciate being whacked with it on the bus. People really need to understand that when they have these gigantic bags with them, that it adds to their total circumference.

nimarka1's avatar

oh I don’t think you really wanna know!

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

I have a giant bag – it’s so heavy, it leads to serious neck spams (experiencing one right now) – it contains my entire life in it because I leave for the whole day and manage to do a lot: it has my Kindle, my food box (pretty heavy, as it has my lunch, snack and fruits), my work carrying case (pretty heavy, lots of patients, lots of forms, lots of other stuff for work), yoga clothes, water bottle, pens and note pads and various letters and bills and scarves and underwear and socks.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

OK OK Ya’ll I gotta bring this up. Every gal I know with a whopper bag also has an enormous amount of gear constantly packed up in her car as well… Their trunk is absolutely unusable for travel due to folding chairs, toys, files, magazines, (stolen from doctors waiting rooms), half the groceries that never made it out from a week ago, clothing, shoes, new purchases hidden from boyfriends, and of course… extra purses. It’s like they use the car trunk as an extra closet.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies not me, no car, never even sat behind a wheel

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies My car is spotless. I hate clutter in my car.

Is your last name… McGyver?

majorrich's avatar

Guilty as charged.. My wife is my pack mule. She brings the vacation purse, she gets the camera, stuff, more stuff, and snacks. Then there is the stuff she buys, and then other stuff. By the end of the day, its like 40 or so pounds (probably less than that, but I swear its bigger on the inside than it is on the outside like Mary Poppins.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

@chyna Your car is spotless probably only because you keep it stuffed away inside a giant whopper purse bag around your shoulder… saves on parking spaces huh?

chyna's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies Ha ha. Actually, I’m kind of a small person, so I don’t carry a bag that is bigger than me.

iphigeneia's avatar

I can’t speak for others, but my bag is something like this:

5% basics (wallet, phone, planner, ipod, keys, camera, notepad, pen, gum)
5% glasses and contact lenses
10% reading material
10% food and drink
20% spare clothes and shoes
50% makeup and hair things

shadling21's avatar

My makeup. Oh, and the entire 11th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica.

vbabe96's avatar

I carry everything in my purse…
tampons, makeup, bandaids, advil, a brush, a planner, extra contacts, contact solution, my glasses, money (other than my credit cards), coupons and a ton of receipts.

Nullo's avatar

A towel, perhaps?

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@chyna I’m with you. My car is also spotless. Even tho I carry a lot of stuff, my purse is on the small side. It’s just made such that I can carry all of that stuff & still not carry a suitcase.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies

Ha ha… No, but my middle name is “Mommy”.

my “Magic Keys” are a very special item from my childhood. They’re actual keys, but the handle part is shaped like a leaf. When I was a kid, those keys fit into knotholes in the trees, and transported me to an enchanted forest village far away from my evil parents. I still carry them with me everywhere. ^_^

@Seek_Kolinahr I like magic keys. They unlock magic things

Funny, I’m a woman with 3 kids and I had to look up online what women carry in their huge purses. I recently got one I think because of peer pressure. I am just too simple I guess. Yes, I wear makeup, never need a touch up. I do carry gloss but I don’t need a mirror to put it on after 25 yrs of doing it. My datebook is in my phone. My keys yes and definitely receipts which never make it into a wallet. Speaking of which, do we need a wallet? I have my driver’s lic, debit card & cash in my wallet. That’s it. As for coins, they are gathered weekly (if not by the kids) and put in a coin jar for a getaway.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

“What do women carry in those humongous purses?”

to make their butts look smaller

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

Oh my bad… The OP asked “What”, not “Why”.

Sorry.
