Do you really believe someone "forgot" the iPhone prototype in a bar?

Asked by mrrich724 (8547points) April 19th, 2010

If you follow Apple, you know that one of their methods of revealing new products is to leak bits of information to the public “accidentally.”

Do you really think it’s possible that someone can work for Apple, and “forget” the iPhone at a bar? I would not let that thing out of my hand much less leave it on a stool.

The fact is, it’s half-way through April and it’s expected to drop in June.

Aren’t the odds good that this was done on purpose? It has generated as much (or more) viral coverage as an official announcement would have, and cost pennies!

Was there an empty vodka tonic found sitting next to it?

Someone got paid some small bank for leaking that. It’s a pretty awesome phone. I’ll probably upgrade with the Verizon version.

It is known that people working on the phone are allowed to use it in the wild. I have no doubt that it slipped out of the guys pockets at the bar or he forgot it. I would bet 20 bucks that it is real and it isn’t a leak from Apple. He just fucked up and is working on his resume this morning.

If you think he couldn’t have lost it I assume that you have never misplaced your phone or car keys.

I think this is the real next iPhone and gizmodo is in a bit of trouble for paying 5K for something that they know was stolen. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of dicks.

It’ll probably take some time to get all of it’s new gadgets in perfect working order,though !

I’m not so sure. John Gruber, a well-known Apple pundit and author of Daring Fireball talks about this a bit, mentioning that even if Apple do make controlled leaks, it’s never like this, it’s usually small tidbits of information leaked to websites. He also mentions that Apple prototypes aren’t the same and Android prototypes. Their secrecy policies are so intense the real devices likely don’t leave a select few rooms. The last point is that the “legit” boilerplate is all too easy to manufacture by a knock-off company, and it has happened in the past. I believe Engadget agreed with him on a few of the points.

That said, it certainly does look very real, and I think that whatever the leaked device is, it’s a good-looking one, and if it is the new iPhone I wouldn’t be very surprised.

I’m very suspicious of the veracity of this story. It happened on March 18. One month ago. That’s a long time for it to surface, IMHO.

@johnpowell

correct, I have never lost my keys or phone or wallet. And I think it’s because I am aware that it happens, so I never let it happen to me. And I think that would cause me to be even MORE aware if it was a top secret Apple product that I could lose my once-in-a-lifetime job over!

I think it is ugly. Do not want. :(

But I think whoever lost it legitimately lost it. And Nick Denton’s going to be in big trouble for buying it off whoever found it.
