How picky is Seagate about sending back hard drives for repair?

Asked by artificialard (2273points) March 11th, 2008

I have to send 2(!) internal Seagate hard drives back to Seagate for repair under warranty. The return instructions include laborious requirements for packaging with an approved box vendor that sells those things for like $60+ (for the box!)

If I just pack it myself carefully with random boxes and foam will Seagate deny my return?

Consider yourself fucked. I hate that company.

I stopped buying Seagate drives long ago… Too often they corrupt physically causing cyclic redundancy checks.

Not returning it under their terms gives them every reason to lay the responsibility of the damage on you. Packaging (and paying an arm & leg) their way is most likely the only way to get it covered under warranty.

Determine the cost effectiveness; you could easily buy new drives with that money.

@squirbel With one of the drives being a 750GB it’s not exactly a throwaway (yet).

I appreciate the ‘Seagate sucks’ advice as I’m inclined to agree in that I’m needing to send 2 drives back at once of different types. But I’m wondering if anyone’s had first-hand or similar industry experience with Seagate or other companies on the packaging thing.

I may have to do this more for work so it’s something I’d like to figure out now…

**The other thing that gets my [expletive] is that the packaging is for 6 – 12 drives. I have ONE 3.5” and ONE 2.5”! Why does the environment have to pay too!?

By the way, hitachi is a brand I’m faithful to, as well as select western digital lines.

artificial: I should have been more descriptive. If you do not follow their wishes to the letter you will NOT get an ounce of help from, also… by even accessing the drives you could negate the warranty, the writers of that warranty are the sneakiest bastards in the history of consumer technology.
