Why do dogs sniff people's crotches?

Asked by Jeremycw1 (1370points) May 12th, 2010

Ok, so what is up with dogs sniffing crotches? I mean, couldn’t they just sniff clothing or your shoe? It’s always the crotch… Why do they do it?

To find out where you have been.

Dogs sniff everything, I haven’t seen a dog only sniff crotches.

To find out if you are in heat?...I belive this its not a joke

Dogs use scent as a communication device. Crotches are areas that are ripe (if you’ll pardon the expression) with scents and pheromones, so it tells a dog a lot about you. Potentially, your health, your reproductive status, your sexual activity, if you’ve undertaken some strenuous activity (sweating), and so on. It’s a rich source of information.

I think we probably smell quite strongly from that area. I often find that dogs will sniff my shoes and pants as well (areas within reach most importantly).

Because they can.

netgrrl's avatar

It’s IMAX for their noses. A dogs sense of smell is so much better than ours.

My friend’s dog totally did this to me a couple days ago. I felt violated :\

I have to admit, though, I don’t know dogs that only do that, but factoring in a dog’s height and a person’s height, it’s a pretty easy area for a dog to sniff.

My dog likes to bite the crotch out of my underwear. I guess he likes my womanly smell.

Draconess25's avatar

@syz That’s the main reason. And there’s a reason why we call guys horn dogs!

SeventhSense's avatar

Because they can’t shake your hand.

anartist's avatar

Same reason they sniff other dogs’ rear ends—getting to know you.

Radar rarely sniffs crotches but he gets excited if I come home w strange dog smell on me – like today when I was visiting a friend.

I think intact dogs tend to be more interested in this than neutered dogs – but that’s only my theory. I have no stats. Just personal observation.

Blackberry's avatar

@Draconess25 What reasons would those be?

Draconess25's avatar

@Blackberry Stereotypically, guys are pervs. Though I’m just as bad. And dogs sniff people’s crotches & hump the furniture. See the connection?

<—— has been known to sniff a crotch

Fernspider's avatar

@hug_of_war – my dog steals my underwear from the laundry basket and licks the crotch and then hides them under the bed. It is so disgusting.

They must really love the smell.

chyna's avatar

@SeventhSense You or the puppy? Or both?

Draconess25's avatar

@Rachienz My girlfriend’s dog does that with my undies….

netgrrl's avatar

Oh yeah, some dogs are even interested in clean undies – which tells us something about how clean is clean.

I prefer it that they buy me a drink first..

I kid

casheroo's avatar

@hug_of_war Oh man, my dog seriously ruined so many pairs of my underwear while pregnant. I don’t know what that was about, but he’d go into my laundry basket and eat them! And my husbands old dog used to eat anything that got period blood on it, he chewed up a pair of my pants once!

Dogs are weird, but sniffing is just what they do.

Fernspider's avatar

LOL @casheroo – oh yeah, don’t get me started on their love of periods! It is very embarrassing and obvious when a dog hard out sniffs my crotch during that time of the month. They can’t keep away.

Too much information no doubt!

My ex’s dog used to eat tampons and poop them out at the most socially inappropriate times.

SeventhSense's avatar

@MissAnthrope
Is there ever a socially appropriate time to shit a tampon? :)

jazmina88's avatar

My dog broke a plate in the kitchen and found my ex’s dirty drawers to bleed on. no other tracks in the house.

My only answer is a question.

Did some dog give you guys all this information about sniffing humans? if so, i would be interested in meeting this dog.

Why Do Dogs Sniff Bottoms? I thought this question kind of rang a bell…

zophu's avatar

They sniff what smells.

anartist's avatar

@MissAnthrope that is just about the funniest thing I’ve read on Fluther!

MacJim's avatar

Ok… I asked my dog this question… His reply was “I have a very sensitive nose and I was just trying to figure what that god awful smell that was coming from your crouch”
