Can anyone recommend a good way to give a dog a pill? And/or herbal tinctures?

Asked by DarlingRhadamanthus (11273points) May 18th, 2010

Okay…my dog is not too chipper. I have to give her tablets three times a day. It’s serious as I almost lost her. She is a small dog, so there is no big Lab mouth you can tickle and toss something in. She is really bright and can suss out that I have hidden something in any treat I give her. She used to take her meds in liver pate…yeah, I know…but not anymore as she is on to that. She just refuses meds in anything…meat, non-meat, ice cream, I’ve tried anything….any ideas? I cannot attempt to pry open her mouth because she has trachea trouble and I don’t want to exacerbate that. And it’s a tiny mouth to boot.

Also, I hope to be transitioning her into herbal medicine…tinctures, mainly. So, suggestions on how to give her tinctures would be helpful, too.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

I used yogurt on a big German Shephard. I believe that you can hide tablets in cheese also, ground meat (cooked), cooked bacon and perhaps peanut butter. Sorry, but I only know how to give tinctures to cats, and it ain’t easy.

Didn’t your vet give you methods?

Pill syringe. Any Petco will have them.

@tinyfaery: As a neophyte, I divided the pill into fourths and used the syringe with some high quality cat food. Milo ate all the wet cat food and spit out the four-part pill, which then dissolved. Vet reminded me to hold the top of Milo’s head like a baseball and then blow on his throat.

My dog is wise to the peanut butter trick. We now use this pill holder we got from the vet. You put the pill under the fingers at the end of the holder, place the holder at the back of the dog’s tongue and push the plunger. It is too far back for the dog to spit out and goes down as slick as can be. We used to put the pill on the end of our wet fingers but that’s a good way to get bit.

How about crushing the tab to fine powder and adding to vanilla ice cream (or plain yogurt)?

@gailcalled in my experience dogs prefer chocolate even if it is not good for them and they quickly get wise to the trick.

I have to give my dog a pill the size of a nickle every day. I crush it up and put it in her dog food. She can’t avoid eating it as I crush it to a fine powder.

My dog is good with her 2 pills and 2 glucosamine a day. She loves food. She used to spit the pill out but she loves the dolop of wet food on top and will eat anything these days.

Love the dog <3

They have green treats at teh vet, where you put the pill inside. would that work?

I drop the pill down the throat and hold his mouth shut as he swallows it down. Sometimes he will try to chew and spit it out by the side ofthe mouth. I had to give him allergy tablets twice a day for 10 days during pollen season. I then give him a milkbone cookie as a treat for downing the pill.

I stick it down my dogs throat. Quick and easy. He likes it.
And, he always gets a cookie after.

Wrap the pill in American Cheese and open pooches mouth. they also make these “pouches” out of some doggie food and they hide the pills, you could try those… good luck!

Thank you for all the great suggestions….! I really appreciate them. She just won’t down them with any food…I think I am going to try to get a pill syringe…and try that.

Fingers crossed….!
