Are there other good vocal excercises?

Asked by blueberry_kid (5957points) June 6th, 2010

In choir, my teacher always gives us funky ways to say Do-Re-Me-Fa-Sew-La-Ti-Do, but she never gave us another vocal excercise.

I would really like to know if anyone knows any other vocal exercise besides that so that i can tell Mrs. Holmes to stop going Do-Re-Me-Fa-Sew-La-Ti-Do, its really stupid.

It’s not stupid. If you want to do it differently, become a music teacher. Not only is she training your voice as to tone and scale, she is teaching you how to “sing” vowels which is different from the way you speak them. You would be singing do re me at Julliard hon.

it’s so, not sew. BTW
There are many excercises for different reasons. You are learning pitch references and it’s very important in sight singing and keeping in pitch.

You can learn from anyone, if you choose to.

@jazmina88 In Rodgers and Hammerstein’s song it is sew.:)

@jazmina88: Good answer: when I learned solfege, we were taught “sol.”

@perspicacious; In the song from The Sound of Music, Julie Andrews makes puns on the entire solfege.

Doe, a deer, a female deer.
Ray, a drop of golden sun,
Me, a name I call myself,
Far, a long long way to run,
Sew, a needle pulling thread,
La, a note that follows sew,
Tea, a drink with jam and bread….pass the Ipecac.

@gailcalled I know. I was being playful. Did you miss that?

I did get that. The entire first ⅔ of the movie puts my teeth on edge. The need to flee from the Nazis and the fact that the story is true redeems the ending. The Von Trapps ran a lovely little inn in Stowe, Vermont, where I stayed the first time I tried to ski. They served us maple syrup on fresh snow for desert.

No one looked like Plurmmer or Andrews.

@gailcalled yes, I had solfege as well, but I didnt want to confuse her. My teacher had us do so. Dr. McCain…...God love her.

Yes, in college, getting my music degree, I sang alot of solfege…..mi mi la ti la si mi…...
