How can I get rid of the cold flu in a day?

Asked by Desidummy (43points) June 6th, 2010

Is that even possible? Like my head really hurts and my nose keeps running (well I better go catch it…just in case someone said that). I got it from this city being really hot.

No way, no how. Suffer through it and take something to make you comfortable.

You get colds or flu from viruses; not from the city’s temperature. The body will mend itself in time. Tylenol, rest and fluids will help you feel better, but will not accelerate the healing process. Sorry.

A cold and the Flu are two different things. Both are caused by viruses, and there is no cure. One can take medication that treats the symptoms, and there is now a product that one can take at the very first sign of a cold that may or may not hasten the cycle of the virus. Other than that; rest, push fluids that are clear, non dairy and non processed sugar, same thing we’ve all heard all our lives. It turns out that these doctors really do know what they’re talking about. Who knew?

zicam and OJ will help.

There is a saying you can take medicine when you have a cold or not, either way it will be over with in a week. Take a decongestant/antihistimine and some ibuprofen you will feel much better.

@Trillian If the OP is congested with a runny nose that is a cold not the flu.

echinecea wil cure it right up. i use it every time i get the sniffles.

Trillian's avatar

@JLeslie I wasn’t trying to give a diagnosis either way. I simply point out that both are viral and have no “cure”. Where did you get the idea that I was saying that it was the flu? I mentioned both because the OP calls it a “cold flu” in the original question.

JLeslie's avatar

@Trillian True. I should not have directed at you, but rather agreed with you and pointed out the difference between the two to the OP.

Trillian's avatar

@JLeslie ok. Yeah, either way, one can only treat the symptoms. I like Mucinex DM.

JLeslie's avatar

@Trillian I thought Mucinex is for congestion? Why would someone take it for the flu?

Trillian's avatar

No, not the flu. I never seem to get the flu. I take it for congestion and cough. It knocks your cough right out of the park, and lets you breathe. Those are the only symptoms I ever get.

Oh, I misunderstood what you meant :).

Drinking gallons of water over the 24 hour period and peeing a lot. If there’s a fever, then doing that, plus sitting under blankets and sweating it out, and avoiding pain meds, unless needed for sleep.

JLeslie's avatar

@Kraigmo Sweating it out is not good, it is very old advice. Uncontrolled fever can cause brain damage. Fevers should be kept down. Cool baths, medication if necessary to control fever are in order. Meanwhile the OP has a cold.

Kraigmo's avatar

@JLeslie , maybe you’re right. I wrote that because out of 5 horrible flus in my life…. the 2 times I sweated it out worked a lot better than the other 3 times when I took meds and didn’t sweat it out.

I never even heard of the old granny’s tale, it was just something I found on my own for me by trying it due to feeling clammy.

How can I answer a Fluther question in 7.3 nanoseconds?

All in good time.

gailcalled's avatar

@mattbrowne:By keeping it short? (1.4 secs)

mattbrowne's avatar

@gailcalled – People also want to get over a broken heart in three days. Time is money. Well, sometimes it doesn’t work that way.

gailcalled's avatar

@mattbrowne: I asked a question. That does leave room for different opinions, of course.

(There are many prolix writers here, according to my standards, and I miss the important kernel due to too much chaff.)

mattbrowne's avatar

@gailcalled – You asked, by keeping it short? And I think it’s a good way to use minimal time. Yes. My 7.3 nanoseconds were an indirect hint that certain illnesses do require time.
