Wow. I don’t know. The sockets may be a little raw for salt. Maybe you do need ice, applied to your cheeks for a while. It will certainly relieve the swelling, and it won’t hurt like the salt may.

Didn’t your dentist tell you what to do? He/she should’ve sent you home with a paper describing everything you need to do.

Let’s weigh this out. On one hand your Doctor said ice. On the other hand, your friend who is not a doctor said pineapple juice. Hmmm… who would I choose to listen to?

i think, maybe i should listen to my doctor :p

Here is my answer from a previous time this question was asked—still holds true.

My doc told me to take new dish sponges, wet them, stick them in plastic bags and place them in the freezer for use after surgery. I did as I was told because I was 18 at the time. Came home from surgery all doped up and, feeling a bit smug because I am so bright, I put on a hoodie and placed a sponge on each side of my face. It was a “Look, Ma, no hands!” kind of enlightenment. Several hours after my surgery, my mom came home and asked how I was doing. I was still pretty groggy as I had slept all afternoon. She made a really funny face and said, “Something stinks.” I started to cry (I was dazed) and, through the gauze in my mouth, tried to explain that I couldn’t brush me teeth and my mouth tasted as bad as it apparently smelled. I got up from the couch to replace my sponges only to realized that I had thawed a piece of cod on my face all afternoon.

When I got my wisdom teeth out it was funny. I asked the nurse if I would have a lot of swelling. And she said very matter of factly: “Dr. Knauss’ patients do not swell,” as if I had offended him in some way. And I didn’t, but they also gave me a prescription for Prednisone which I think helped a lot. But the warm salt water is a good idea and hot toddies helped too.

I’m sure the oral surgeon gave you a sheet of instructions. Just follow them. My kids didn’t have much swelling after a couple of days.
