On the Andy Griffith show there was a character who played deputy Warren, what happened to deputy Barney during this time and what ever happened to the other guy?

I believe I recall correctly that the actor who played Fife, Don Knotts, wanted to do movies so he left the series. His character resigne left town to become a cop, and Warren replaced him.
