Has there ever been a hybrid between a human and animal?

Asked by Vincent_Lloyd (3007points) July 7th, 2010

Just wondering if there has ever been an experiment where a human and animal have been combined? I’m assuming there hasn’t sadly….But it’s not worth a try to ask right?

Okay, there have been chimeric species that are of non-human variety…but this sparked controversy when the first human-non human chimeras were formed, so to speak. I’m not quite sure why you are saddened by not having this happen more often.

Not exactly – some people would say that the earliest (homo erectus or homo egaster or such) was a hybrid.

I am sure there are people trying to make a hybrid as we speak (think chickens and sheep), but if there were any succesful outcomes…, i don’t think so.

It would be fun to be a Hawkwoman, like in the comics.

The word species implies no possibility of fertile offspring.

@YARNLADY Yes it would. I am down to see a Mermaid also.

I’m mostly talking about humans and animals not animal and animal. But actually now that I thought of it. What’s a good hybrid that has a wolf in it that you can raise?

dpworkin's avatar

Wolves, dogs and coyotes are all Canis, and can interbreed.

I’m pretty sure the Nazis tried to interbreed humans and animals. I think Winston Churchill tried to crossbreed a human/ape creature to prove evolution to the Catholic Church or something (some discovery channel documentary, I think. I may be completely wrong, though.)

annnd, maybe this counts: Animal-Human Hybrids Research Approved in the U.K.

Maybe it did back in the days when we were young, and practicing cannibalism with the Neanderthals. But other than anime, I don’t think it could really work out.

In Canada, the production of human-non_human chimerata (chimeras) is explicitly banned for ethical reasons.

The US does not currently have laws governing such research.

This is not a suitable area of research as Rifkin articulates in the article for which @Simone_De_Beauvoir provided a link.

If I had a private research facility and made a pig-human-baby-thing, I wouldn’t publish shit even if it was legal in that country.

@zophu

So, what exactly would you do with it ?

And when it was old enough to ask you about its origins, what would you tell it ?

zophu's avatar

@Buttonstc I’d probably accelerate its growth so it can make vice-president candidate for the 2012 elections running alongside Palin.

(damn it, i’m tired, that was my attempt at a political joke. I usually try stay away from those. Tried to mention lipstick somewhere in there. Didn’t fit.)

Never thought about it, but I may have actually been married to one.

In the context of your question, no. There has never been a human-animal hybrid.
