General Question

A friend of mine revealed she is gay, and I want to help her find support sites, any ideas?

Asked by freestyletrue (126points) August 11th, 2010

I am trying to be very supportive and helpful, but I can’t relate to all of her issues. Does anyone know of a (CLEAN) site where she can speak to “counselor” type people and get support, advice, etc.?

You might find the organization Parents Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays helpful. And there’s the Human Rights Campaign

These are 2 excellent sites.

I know there’s an organization called LGBT, I heard they were really good. But, thats just what I heard. I don’t know much about it.

Your friend could also try Fluther. Anyone that isn’t helpful would quickly get modded. We have many kind and caring people here that would be happy to help your friend.

Q&A sites were actually the place I turned to when I was at this stage, so I will have to recommend them as well, since they helped me. I wanted support and advice, but I wasn’t ready to tell people in real life. So I turned to Q&A sites. Pity the ones I were on were seldom-moderated half-cesspools. If only Fluther had existed back then… :)

Does she want a support site? Sometimes suggesting a support group to a person makes them feel different when they didn’t to start with. This happened when I divorced. The counselor at the school called and asked if I wanted my girls to be part of a support group for kids of divorced parents. I told her no, I felt that would only make them feel different. She agreed that in some cases it did. My point is be sure friend wants to be part of a support group before you start looking for one for her.

I have to agree with @perspicacious. From the way your question is worded, it sounds like perhaps you are looking for ways to be more supportive of her, in which case, PFLAG – Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays – might be helpful for you in understanding how you can be more supportive of her.

For the amount of people who are admittedly gay on this site, I’m surprised there are only 8 answers so far. . . Come on guys!

I would start with yourself. If you are good friends, be a good listener and don’t assume too much. There’s a lot going on if this a new feeling for your friend. Depending on were you live there may be a Lesbian and Gay support system in place. I used to live in California where there is more open mindedness about such things. The Lesbian Gay and Bi Times (LGBT), San Diego online might help you out.
