So, what exactly can I expect from a fetal nonstress test?

Asked by keobooks (14322points) August 16th, 2010

I’ve checked online and I’ve seen they can last anywhere between 20 – 90 minutes. And sometimes you have to retake it? Will I be allowed to move or go to the bathroom? Should I bring a book? Can I sleep?

Am I even asking the right questions? I know what it’s suposed to monitor, and I’m not too worried about that. I just don’t know what to actually expect. Considering I’ll be doing these twice a week until I deliver, I’m a bit curious.

What kind of test is this?

The length of the test just depends on your baby’s activity level and heart rate. Your movement will be limited because of the monitors that are on your belly. You will be able to move some, but not much (because of the possibility of moving the monitors from where they need to be). If you needed to go to the bathroom, you would have to let them know so they could take the monitors off your belly. You might want to take a book to read in case it takes the longer time frame.

@Seaofclouds is right. Bring a book. It’s a boring procedure.

Just had it. Got a lot of reading done. It wasn’t boring because it was my first time, but I can predict that it will get boring after doing this twice a week for the next 6 or so weeks. I found by accident that if I drank ice water, my daughter went crazy in there. And that was kind of amusing,

They are so boring! Definitely remember to bring a book. Sorry you have to have one so often!
