Have you had a lucky day?

Asked by zen_ (6281points) August 20th, 2010

This clip inspired the question.

Have you had a near miss? Ever been really, but really, lucky?

Watch til the end – there are different kinds of luck, it seems.

That last one had me cracking up. The only near miss I can think of was a car accident I was in when I was 17. I was in my friend’s truck sitting in the middle of the back seat. I didn’t have my seatbelt on (it wasn’t require for people over 16 in the back seat) and we were getting ready to go through an intersection. I decided to put my seatbelt on for some reason (I don’t know why though), and when we went through the intersection, another truck ran the red light and we t-boned them. The firefighters said that if it wasn’t for my seatbelt, I would’ve went through the windshield (because of my size, the truck layout, and the force we hit the other vehicle). I ended up with some lacerations and bruises from the seatbelt, but that’s much better than what I would have had if I went through the windshield.

Last Saturday I had taken my friend out for her birthday and by the time I took her home there was a bad lightening, rain storm. I pulled up in front of her house and it was raining so hard she couldn’t get out of the car. I sat there a couple of minutes and then moved up to park in front of her her driveway (not in her driveway). One minute later, a bolt of lightening hit her 16 foot tree that was in front of her house and the tree fell across the road, exactly where I had been parked. I was very lucky that day.

Eleven years ago I went on a holiday to South Africa with my family. Near the end of the holiday, we went to a restaurant with one of my mum’s school friends. When we got home, we were told that a few days after we had been there that exact restaurant had been blown to pieces by a pipe bomb. I know its not a lucky day, but its the closest call I ever had. Thank goodness. Great video by the way.

I once had a near-miss collision when the commercial flight I was on heading to National Airport in D.C. had a near collision with a small plane that was taking off. The Captain pulled the nose of the plane straight up and the engines were screaming.

So were the people in coach. Up in first class all of us road warriors just looked at each other and shrugged. But it was, in hindsight, pretty scary.

I guess my near miss was in 1986 when a United Airlines crashed on take-off from Metro Airport. I had reservations to fly that same airline 2-days later…Man, how terrified was I?

Nothing bad has happened, so I suppose so.

Yep, I won $21.20 in the lottery. I was hoping for the 20million prize, but 21.20 is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick!

@discounthandbags And welcome to flutherville – you’ve been here three weeks longer than I thought someone with your nick would be; I swear I thought it was Spam at first. No offense, but… discount handbags? It’s cool now that I know you sell them. You haven’t posted a link – so you are for real. Sorry I flagged you as spam (though you didn’t know, or notice it.)

Big :-)

Sorry.
