Why don't they extend Black Friday to Wednesday (day before Thanksgiving)?

Asked by MagicalMystery (900points) November 24th, 2010

I was at the mall before, with money, credit cards and the shopping itch. All these signs were up in the department stores “Friday doorbusters start at 4:00 a.m.” I was thinking how stupid is this, that people are here now and would have to return Friday just to get this sale. Nobody was buying anything. I am not likely to return Friday and fight crowds.

Why don’t they extend Black Friday to Wednesday, day before Thanksgiving?

I think they should start at labor day when people are relaxed and not so stressed with having to cook turkey dinners and then wake up super early and then shop.

Then it wouldn’t be Black Friday, it would be Black Wednesday.
Seriously, because they think everyone is home cooking on Wednesday and won’t really be shopping til Friday.

@chyna I think you are right about them thinking people are home cooking or traveling on Wednesday. I think it’s bad enough that some stores have sales on Thanksgiving day. I use to hate working Thanksgiving day in retail because people would come in and talk about it being a shame that I had to be there instead of home with my family. I always wanted to tell them that if people like them weren’t there shopping on Thanksgiving day, I wouldn’t have to be there.

Black Friday is also typically when most people start preparing for Christmas. While it seems it’s slowly being pushed earlier and earlier each year, most people I know won’t put up decorations or even start their Christmas shopping until Black Friday.

Almost all stores set up their sales Wednesday, it is too difficult to set up for Black Friday on crazy Black Friday, super long day already. So, you can get all of the sales on Wednesday. The only things you won’t get are those nutty, crack of dawn, limited quantity deals at places like Walmart and Target.

Personally, I would never go to a store at o’dark hundred in the morning to buy something, I think it is awful, and as a former retail worker it pisses me off that shopping has come to this. I used to say that the day my store opened before 8:00 was the day I would quit. It’s abusive in my opinion. Many of us already work 6 days a week the 5 weeks before Christmas, and the day/week after Christmas is the worst, and then they have the stores open Jan 1 for nothing. I swear that New Years Day we had almost no business and tons of theft, because we had a skeleton crew.

The lowest price specials are very few and far between. Target actually did have a 4 day special this week, in addition to the Black Friday nonsense. The day after Thanksgiving is the most likely time for the most customers because many have that day off.

@chyna It should just be “Black July” and wrap all the biggies into one buying spree!!

I would think it’s because many people are already horrendously busy preparing for the following day.

@FutureMemory that is true too. I was at the mall and the supermarket on Wednesday, and the supermarket was the place the parking lot was full. But, it is probably two-fold; people are worried about last minute items at the grocery store, and maybe straightening up the house, and the stores do not really tell the public the sales are the same on Wednesday. People also are travelling, or still working on Wednesday, most people have Friday off.
