Why do some men do these things in the locker room?

Asked by vinw09 (12points) January 5th, 2011

I understand that guys just wanna be guys and often walk around the locker room naked for several obvious reasons (showering, sauna, etc.) But why is it that when they are in the locker room doing other things such as brushing their teeth, shaving, combing their hair, weighing themselves on the scale, etc. they have to do it naked? Why can’t they just quickly wrap a towel around their waist before doing these things?

After you’ve stood 2 feet from someone naked in the shower what do you have to hide?

Is there nowhere a guy can just be himself with nothing between him and the world?

People have different standards for being comfortable with nudity. Some can’t stand to see naked bodies. The sight of those bodies makes them uncomfortable for whatever reason. Often if’s due to family or origin issues. But it could also be fear of what feeling arise inside when you see naked guys.

Men do these things because this is the only place they can do them. Because most men like wandering around naked, goofing around and showing off. It’s one of the things guys do when there are only guys around. It’s a locker room, for God’s sake!

They could, but why should they? Generally speaking you need more of a reason to do something than you need not to do something.

I don’t know how you boys do it. I am too shy for that sort of thing. I don’t want other women to be checking out my junk. And, if an attractive woman walked by me naked in the change room, my face would turn the color of a cherry tomato.

pretty ladies make me shy

I’m with @Adirondackwannabe. Also, when you play on a team (played college basketball) and shower together for several years….. as I did in college, who cares.

Why shouldn’t they?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@BoBo1946 I was thinking the same thing about the team thing. After we’ve hung out with the same guys for years we get used to it and don’t think about it. (I probably could’ve phrased that better lol)

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Jude That would do the same to me. Pretty women intimidate me when I’m naked in the locker room.

@Adirondackwannabe Haha. :) I would have an easier time walking by a bunch of dudes.

When I first met Lucillex3, I was all “gah!” and I’m sure that I acted retarded. She’s beautiful.

Wait, what? What guy would be shaving or brushing his teeth in a locker room… and not doing it in the shower? Okay, combing hair (for them as does that) could be done while clothed; I always prefer it then, anyway, because putting on clothes often messes up my hair (it’s a coordination thing that I’m working on, okay?).

But who wants to weigh himself with a wet towel around his waist? Might as well ask somebody to come and step on the scale with you.

@Adirondackwannabe i played 4 years with the same guys! You don’t give it second thought.

It’s fun to whip the lads’ arses with a wet towel too. Just a bit of “male bonding” via the battle scars.

Why would men care about hiding anything when we often use this kind of urinal!

@BoBo1946 Knew what that was going to be before I opened the pic. lol

I would like to do some studies on this very thing… Guess I’ll have to grab my clipboard, laser pointer, camera, and just go in the mens locker room!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@JustJessica Ok, but you have to dress like the reporter that went into the Jets locker room.

@JustJessica I’d advise against using 3D technology however…....schwinngg! :¬)

@Adirondackwannabe I’ll just get naked… after all when in Rome…....

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@JustJessica I was trying to frame a snappy reply, but I got nothing. GA

@JustJessica Ok, then. Now we’re talking. Here’s the address of the locker room. See you there in, oh, shall we say half an hour? Naw. I’m not sure I want to wait that long. Let’s say 20.

JustJessica's avatar

@wundayatta I highly doubt you guys would want to see me naked, it’s quite the site.

wundayatta's avatar

@JustJessica Perhaps you are right. But to see you naked in a locker room with a dozen guys in the buff snapping wet towels at each other—priceless!

Besides which, you look adorable in your avatar :)

JustJessica's avatar

@wundayatta I agree, I’m sure I’d have TONS of fun!!!!

Actually, this Q prompts me to request back to the OP:

Assuming you’re not a man yourself, then how do you know – and why do you care – what is going on in the men’s locker room?

In the interest of full disclosure, I worked for the Worcester (Massachusetts) Parks Department one summer while I was in college, and the old-timers there told me that the absolute worst job in the system was cleaning the women’s public restrooms in any park in the city after a summer weekend. And since I was the new guy, I got to find that out for myself, all over the city. They weren’t kidding. Cleaning public restrooms is a job that everyone should do at least once in his life for the humbling experience. (I don’t recommend doing it for an entire summer, unless you need help deciding whether or not to make a career out of working for the Parks Department. I never felt the urge.) I do know some of what goes on in women’s public rest rooms – or did in the mid 1970s, anyway – and it was disgusting, whatever it was.

Men brush their teeth, shave and comb their hair while naked in the locker room? I never knew. I am used to women being naked in the changing area, or by the showers or sauna, but not in the area of the sinks, mirrors, or bathrooms. Ha. Learn something new every day.
