Do people shoot wild boar and then eat them as bacon and roasts or are they too disgusting?

Asked by Aster (20023points) February 16th, 2011

Men in Texas are hunting wild pigs in our county and some are planning on eating them. They are allegedly becoming too numerous and that they will attack. Is eating them common and do they taste like regular pigs? I hear they can jump six feet and have huge teeth ; it makes me cringe to think about it. So, are they tasty?

“Tasty” is a pretty relative concept.

My husband’s cousins hunt a lot, and once they hunted wild boar. It was one of the best dinners I’ve ever had. The meat was delicious. I’m sure to some extent the taste depends on who cooks it (in our case, a professional chef) and what part of the boar is eaten.

You don’t have to hunt one to try it. You can order a wild boar roast online. I sent one to my dad for Christmas once, and he said it was great.

I’m guessing here….they might be tasty because they eat a lot of roots and berries…?

My husband went boar hunting with some friends. They had us over for BBQ… I was skeptical, but it was delicious.

Boar Taint

I’m given to understand that once they reach puberty, boars left uncastrated (as they would be in the wild) have a good chance of being, shall we say, gamey tasting.

@laureth Kind of like Mountain Oysters I would think. Oh, Gaagh!!!!

Ive heard of landowners who will invite hunters to just kill them on site. just leave them where they drop. In some areas they have become an epidemic. They don’t really have any natural predators so the population is exploding. One hog will feed a lot of families though.

Tasty. There are no actual wild boar left in the UK but some have been imported to be raised on farms here, mainly for the organic meat market. They’re like a stronger, more flavourful pork.
