When you shop/hire/ do you prefer goods or services from a Union shop or an Independent worker?

Asked by 12Oaks (4051points) February 19th, 2011

I ALWAYS will go for the Independent when the option is there. If Union is the only choice, I’d just assume either pass or do the project myself/find a product similiar to which the quest involves. Independents or generally way cheaper, and saving money is a good thing.

Independent and preferably locally made.

Union shop as opposed to non-union; I remember my history and what the unions have done for American workers.

If it is something locally made by a craftsman, that is another issue entirely and I would choose that.

In India…..majority of people prefer independent workers….

Independent, Unions will probably be slower, less efficient, and more expensive.

I don’t make my decision on that basis, ever. I buy the best value for my dollar, commensurate with my needs. In fact, I don’t even know most of the time if the product I buy is union or non-union, or even where it was made. That’s all irrelevant to me.

I shop/hire by referral first then by checking feedback/reviews.

I don’t have the option. Only teachers, actors, and policemen are allowed unions in Florida.

I try to choose local merchants. Doesn’t matter if it’s union or not.

I don’t care. That is not how I choose products.

@Seek_Kolinahr

That’s not entirely true. The construction trade unions in Florida are as strong as anywhere.

I have never used this as criteria when purchasing. Often, especially when purchasing large items, one has no choice. The only products available are done in union shops.

But, I do not think that unions are always good. They can protect bad employees from being weeded out or corrected. They can drive up prices so that the union organizers get their share of the workers pay.

I do not think that all employers are bad. This is often the suggestion when defending unions.

There is no one size fits all.

But the direct answer to your question is I would prefer to buy from a non union, locally owned business. The product is almost always superior if the producer has a vested interest and personal pride.

I also prefer non-union locally owned and produced goods.

I choose my purchases by price and quality only, I don’t notice or ask if they are union or non.
