Have there ever been times in your life when you went through your day, and as you were getting ready for bed realized you'd forgotten to eat that day?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46825points) March 22nd, 2011

It happened to me several times when I was in my teens and early 20’s, but not since then. Back then, though (assuming I didn’t forget to eat) my entire daily consumption often consisted of a bean and cheese burrito and two cheese enchiladas from Taco Tico. In college my dinner often consisted of a roll and mashed potatoes. (I’m 5’ 7”, btw.)

Have your eating habits changed over the years?

Sure, this has happened to me before. Happened in my teens and, at times, happens now. Usually during the summer when I am off of work (teacher) and a lazy bum.

I can’t go more than 2 hours without getting hungry. Even if I’m extremely busy, I’ll still feel those hunger pains and realize I need to eat something soon. So, that has and probably never will happen to me.

As a teenager I did eat a lot and almost constantly, yet stayed very thin. In my early 20’s I have slowed down a bit until a few weeks ago when I decided I would no longer be skinny. I’ve ramped up my caloric intake and started lifting a lot more weights, Starting to see some progression (gained about 5 pounds), but hopefully even more in the next few months.

nope i love my food way too much to forget to eat for a whole day!
and having a fast metabolism sure wont allow me to unconsciously starve myself

JmacOroni's avatar

Yes, I forget to eat. People often look at me like I’m crazy when I say that, but sometimes it literally slips my mind. Or, more frequently, the majority of the day will go and by evening my stomach will growl, and I notice that I haven’t eaten all day. I eat a generally healthy diet, but I was heavy growing up, and as I’ve said before I’m not a skinny girl now, so I really try to pay attention to what I’m eating. Despite being a fat kid, I’ve never been able to sit down and put away a lot of food at once… but I did eat a lot of junk when I was younger. I go out of my way to avoid junk food now, and I cook the majority of what I eat at home. That aspect of my diet has changed.
Probably to an extreme, in some ways. My friends love to tease me about “eating like a bird” or often say things like “if I ate like you do, I would waste away.” It is actually kind of hurtful to hear those things, because I am not as slim as I would like to be, despite my eating habits.

erichw1504's avatar

@JmacOroni You’re looking pretty slim to me. If either of those ladies is you.

JmacOroni's avatar

@erichw1504 not as slim as I’d like to be. ;) I’m on the right, yes. The girl on the left is my sister.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

No,I never forget to eat.Ever. XD

janbb's avatar

Just checked my food diary and – um, nope!

Haleth's avatar

No way! I would freaking die.

When I worked at the coffeehouse sometimes I wouldn’t have time to eat. I’d wake up late, burn rubber to get to work on time, set up the store, then the morning rush starts right away and I have to place my orders by 9AM, and by the time I’m done with that it’s nearly time for the lunch rush to start or we’ve got some customer who wants to special order something. The whole time I’m thinking, “Damn it, I just want to eat something! Leave me alone, customers!” I start to feel tired and lightheaded if I haven’t eaten in a few hours.

I went all day yesterday till dinner with just a ½ a cup of coffee. That almost never happens….I must have been abducted by aliens.

deni's avatar

Never. My relationship with food is intense and constant.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@Cruiser Maybe the aliens got you pregnant?

Mariah's avatar

I’m too set in my routine to forget to eat!

Coloma's avatar

I am TERRIBLE with this. Have been on a major jag again the last few months where I have coffee, maybe a breakfast shake and then, BAM..it’s 3–4-5 o’ clock and all of a sudden I am about to keel over from lack of food fatigue.

I have been in a rut for awhile now and am trying to get back to eating frequent small meals.

Yesterday was one of ‘those’ days.
And then, I was extra bad, haha…had a half of a happy brownie and a glass of juice around 4 o’ clock ( ‘Happy brownie hour ) :-) while waiting on my daughter for dinner and a hangout.

FINALLY had General chicken with rice and pea pods at 7:30.

Baaaad, baaaad, Coloma! haha

downtide's avatar

Hell no. I have a tendency towards hypoglycaemia and if I skip a meal I’m likely to keel over three hours later. When I was a kid I used to stash chocolate bars in my room for just such “emergencies”.

Dutchess_III's avatar

When I was younger I really didn’t notice he effects of not eating. I didn’t feel tired, or dizzy or anything. I do now, though. I get a bad MOON if I don’t eat at least sometime during the day.

deni's avatar

Also, I get extremely pissy when I’m hungry. So I avoid being hungry at all costs, for everybody’s sake.

Cruiser's avatar

@Dutchess_III That might explain this insane craving I have for dark chocolate!!

downtide's avatar

@deni I reccommend you get your blood sugar levels checked. Getting extremely pissy when hungry is a sign of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar).

deni's avatar

@downtide I’ve been told that before…..next time I go to the doctor I think I will. It’s very rarely a problem though, only when I’m extremely hungry…but it is almost unbearable then.

downtide's avatar

@deni it’s the same for me, I can manage it by controlling my diet (never skipping meals, avoiding sugary food & processed carbs) and now I rarely have a hypo crash. The last one was I think about 3 years ago. But at other times my blood sugar is normal so it wasn’t diagnosed until one time I passed out in the street, was rushed to hospital and they tested me then. They thought I was a diabetic who’d taken too much insulin.

I’ll PM you with some links about diet control.

Dutchess_III's avatar

You guys…isn’t it natural to get pissy when you’re hungry? I mean…..think of the difference between a well fed, full lion and one who’s hungry. Which one would you rather play with! Being hungry makes people aggressive, and that’s for a good reason. Then you eat and your good mood is restored.

deni's avatar

@Dutchess_III Of course there is normal grumpiness when you are hungry and just want some food. But for me, every once in a while, it is MUCH much worse. It’s seriously intense. I almost killed my boyfriend once. I stayed up all night crying! I was so angry, I refused to eat!

etignotasanimum's avatar

I don’t mean to, but when I’m really involved in a book or an important project for school, I forget to eat. It’s like the intense amount of concentration I’m putting into my work switches off my hunger. There have been times where my sister or a friend has to remind me to have a snack or a full meal, because I’m too absorbed in my work to remember to do so on my own. Granted, once I’m done working for the day I get super hungry, but I don’t usually get dizzy or anything. Actually, I get more queasy when I’m hungry than anything else. I’m working on breaking this habit, though.

Dutchess_III's avatar

You almost killed your boyfriend because you were hungry @deni?

@etignotasanimum Pack snacks around with you…sliced fruit and veggies and stuff. Finger food that you can eat without thinking…

deni's avatar

@Dutchess_III It isn’t really the hunger. It starts with being pretty hungry which then puts me in a bad mood…and then, on these certain occassions, it just escalates terribly. Everything goes wrong and I can’t get out of the funk. Like I said it’s insane.

JmacOroni's avatar

@etignotasanimum ditto. Exactly. It is far worse if I’m busy, just like you said it is like my concentration switches off my hunger.

Dutchess_III's avatar

DAMN IT DENI!!! EAT EAT EAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeruba's avatar

Yes, back in my twenties, when I was living alone and not bothering with a conventional schedule or routine. I’d become very much involved in whatever I was doing, and sometimes thoughts of food just didn’t intrude.

Never happen now.

etignotasanimum's avatar

@Dutchess_III @JmacOroni I’m glad someone gets it and doesn’t think it’s a purposeful, freaky sort of habit! And I will definitely start bringing snacks with me. It’s a wonder that I hadn’t thought of that earlier…. :)

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

Only in work crisis situations that are fueled by adrenaline and coffee all day.Otherwise, I tend to whimper when not fed.

janedelila's avatar

All the time. I get pissy when I have to stop what I’m doing just to eat. If I never had to worry about food again, except for pleasure, I would be sooooo happy.

Berserker's avatar

I’d get way too hungry way before then not to notice. I don’t eat much at all, and barely ever any actual meals, just little things throughout the day. A salad, a burger, can of ravioli wtv, but I don’t think I could go all day and not eat.

12Oaks's avatar

I weight 260#, so what do you think? Actually, there may have been a day or two (or two hundred) where while I may not have eaten, I surely made up for it in a “liquid diet,” if you get my drunken drift. But no, not now. My diet is much more healthy and not one gram or twelve ounces of barley or hops enters into my stomach.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Yes and I still do that which is horrible for my health. The truth is I often don’t want to be bothered to fix food or to get messy or eat in front of people when at work. If someone cooks for me then I’ll eat. If someone else wants food then I’ll cook and eat but if it’s just me then I get distracted easily.

rooeytoo's avatar

I have never in my entire life forgotten to eat.

I like what @deni said way up ^ there, “My relationship with food is intense and constant.”

Dutchess_III's avatar

Wow! I have been visited by @AstroChuck!

At those for whom eating is a hassle…I’m glad I’m not the only one!! Like, right now, I’m hungry but….I’d rather be doing this!

downtide's avatar

@Dutchess_III that is why I usually have a bag of dried fruit & nuts on my desk

Dutchess_III's avatar

I munch on sunflower seeds during the day. In the shell. It takes about as many calories to get a seed out of the shell as the seed itself contains! I also munch on tic tacs, and I don’t know why. I think it all has to do with not smoking at work.
