What is it that makes an ordinary image sexy?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) June 10th, 2011

Many times, it is said a picture says a thousand words, but it do not say every word. As a visual nation, there is a lot said about what is racy, too sexy, obscene, etc. What does make an image sexy? I once read where someone said something to the affect, “I don’t know what obscenity is, but I know it when I see it.” If the image is not of a woman in a wet t-shirt or a nude woman caressing herself or something else quite blatant, what makes it sexy?
What about simple lips, some would say sexy while to others it is just lips.

Maybe a woman’s chest?
Can art be sexy and what would do so?

Some, art photography, would that be sexy, and if so, why?

A simple photo of a gal in heels and a skirt, what is the sexy part of that? What you see, what the photo makes your mind think, where does the sexiness come from?

Sometimes just an ad with a message?

What takes an ordinary image or object and makes it sexy?

The diverse mind of the observer, like with most stuff.

I didn’t find any of the links sexy ..lol. They felt a bit trashy to me ..which I don’t find attractive.

I agree with @ucme ..it really depends on the observer.

Love. Seriously.

Let’s say someone is dating someone “ordinary” looking (pc cops – please fuck off) – and they really love them – that would transform them into someone sexy – perhaps many times over. No amount of lighting could help that. Love – the power to make someone sexy.

@zen An image dosn’t react back to you so how can it be sexy when you cannot love it as you would a breathing being?

A picture of your significant other?

Reacting back at you is something else. I merely answered the question.

I mean, these are “ordinary” images – as in not pornographic, but they are all suggestive. Lips are a sensual part of the body, but notice how all of the photos you selected have the lips parted. These photos are suggestive of sex, which is what makes them “sexy.”

@ANef_is_Enuf Is it a mere desk top wall paper of a drawn robot that is sexy or is it sexy because it has a female shape and is on all 4s like a pin up pose, thus leading the mind to think female, leading to sexy? Which begs the thought no image, unless graphic and gratuitously presented in a sexual way is actually sexy with out the human mind making it so?

@Hypocrisy_Central ”...unless graphic and gratuitously presented in a sexual way is actually sexy with out the human mind making it so?”

Of course they aren’t sexy without the human mind making it so. Which, is why it depends on the observer. I highly doubt a horse would look at those pictures and think hubba hubba. It depends on the observer. Some people are turned on by any female human. Others may be much more specific in what sexually excites them. I repeat….it depends on the observer. ;)

I wish there were more paintings of sexy men. Anyway—there are many reasons why a painting of a person might look sexy. As Plucky Dog states, it’s up to personal interpretation. I think large breasts are gross and I think overly-muscular men are, too. But damnit if I don’t love me some Greek Gods. ;P

Hype and peer pressure.. PR and exploitation.. The right angles , lighting and pose. It could be sexy but not sexual.
