What’s up with Nine? Why is it viewed as some type of mystical number?

What’s up with seven? Why seventh Heaven? Why seven deadly sins? Why lucky number seven? Each phrase developed on its own, and only taken together does there seem to be something mystical. But some of the phrases themselves do have explanations.

“Seventh Heaven” and “cloud nine,” for instance, are probably related. The former refers to religious lore in which the seventh level of Heaven is the highest level and the dwelling place of God. The phrase “cloud seven” precedes the phrase “cloud nine” and seems to have been a reference to the notion of “seventh Heaven.”

At some point, the phrase changed to “cloud nine.” Because the timing works out, popular etymology has it that this was due to a cloud atlas being published which classified various types of clouds and placed type nine as the highest cloud. This may not be correct, but it’s the best going theory we have at the time.

The apotheosis of accumulated coincidences gives us mysticism.

This explains eleven.I don’t know about 7 or 9.Ask a Trekkie ;)

Because three is the ultimate number, and three times three makes nine, the meta-three. ;-)

Because seven eight nine.

Because, like children, every number is special.
Pick one and try it.

Nine times nine = 81, half the eight and double the one, et vĂ³ila: 42.
Same goes for sevens (seven times seven = 49, minus seven: 42.)

erichw1504's avatar

@rebbel 6 times 6 is 36, plus 6 is 42.

@erichw1504 See, there you go, 42 is always the answer.

12 noon used to be 9 o’clock.
Hence Noon!

I read that somewhere.

I think it depends on the culture. All numbers have some type of significance, to a society, in some form or another.

This is very interesting:

The number 9 is the only number that when it is multiplied by any other number (no matter how large that number is)and the individual numbers of the answer are added together until you only have a single number the result is always 9.
eg: 9×6000 = 54000….5 + 4 + 0 +0 + 0 = 9
9×50 = 450….... 4 + 5 + 0 = 9
9×2 =18…....... 1 + 8 = 9
