Have you ever hidden something so well that you cannot find it?

Asked by 1niceoldlady (35points) December 14th, 2011

I think I hid something valuable someplace and I cannot for the life of me recall where I put it. I think I am losing my marbles! Has this happened to anyone? Anyone ever find a hidden item? Any suggestions as to where or how to look?

About 10 years ago, I hid two $20 dollar bills somewhere in my house. I probably will never remember where I stashed it.

I have a theory about this. When someone says or thinks: “I’m going to put this in a safe place” those are the summoning words that open a vortex to the Safe Place Dimension. Unfortunately, the only way to retrieve something from the Safe Place Dimension is to either replace it, or eliminate the need for it. Then another vortex is opened and the object is spit back out in plain sight. It’s one of the Laws of Physics.

@JilltheTooth I think your theory is dead on. @1niceoldlady Welcome to fluther.

More times than I can count. Over the years I have hid from myself:
• Three of my airbrushes
• A money order.
• A check, (didn’t find it until it was too late to cash)
• Tools
• A camera
• Clothes.
• Keys to locks.
• Locks to keys.
• Important papers.
• Flashlights.
• Candles
• Batteries.
• I even hit a sack of onions from myself, (the smell led to the discovery)
• Fuses
• Shoestrings
• Chess set
• Scrabble game
Those are just the things I remember off hand, (or have found to know I hid them from myself), no doubt there are more discoveries to be made.

I accepted an overseas assignment and kept my home so we could return. To reduce cost, we decided to put our things in storage and rent our house. The company would not store firearms and I had an old rifle from the 1800’s (a Springfield Trapdoor, if there are any enthusiasts here) that I decided to hide in a place where no one would find it – between two layers of insulation in the attic, far, far, away from the access door.

When I returned 5 years later, I had to buy a metal detector to find it. Idiot!

@LuckyGuy Cool. A Trapdoor. Glad you found it.

My daughter and I racketed around this house for several days looking for our valuable jewelry.

On day three, I remembered that we had stashed everything in my safety deposit box.

My mother used to squirrel away $20 bills in odd places. We found a number of them in old pocket books. traveling sewing kits and tupperware containers.

@Adirondackwannabe Of course I spent months thinking the other people found it and whisked it away. I knew they didn’t but still…

@LuckyGuy If I had known it was up there you’d get back to find a roofless home.

It isn’t so much a matter of hiding something as it is putting it in a safe place. My mother had a wonderful slide of my grandpa with his parakeet, Pepper. I snagged it from her and “put it in a safe place” until I could save enough money to have it made into a photograph. That was 1984. I have searched every knook and cranny of my house and can’t find it.

So often. The worst is, I usually find it again after I have had to go and buy a replacement. Grrr.

LOL! Yes, I use to deliberately hide my cigarettes from myself to help myself quit smoking. It didn’t help very much though. The only way I was finally able to quit was cold turkey. : )

Many many many times.

For three months I tore my house apart every couple of weeks trying to find two gold bracelets that are incredibly important to me. One was my grandma’s and one was given to me by cousins for my college graduation. At one point I went through all my drawers amd closet, I even separated clothes to be thrown out and donated while I was searching, but would not give them away, because I was still afraid somehpw the bracelets were in the clothes even though it was basically impossible. I had those two piles of clothes waiting to go out of the house for a couple of months, I thought my husband was going to freak out.

Finally, one day, I was in a drawer I had looked in probably 50 times, because I usually keep some jewelry there and I found them straight up on the side of the bracelets right against the front of the drawer.

“I snagged it from her and “put it in a safe place” until I could save enough money to have it made into a photograph.”

Do you think you might have put it between the pages of a book or magazine?

mcbealer's avatar

This happens to me as well all too often. Between those items and trying to remember passwords online, I get so frustrated sometimes!

Sometimes telling a friend where you’ve stashed stuff is helpful, as long as they’ve got a better memory of course.

If only dogs could help us find all of those hidden treasures…

Wait till you get older. Between aging eyes, forgetfulness, and lack of energy to search for things, its easy to lose things these days. But, I just figure that if I couldn’t find it, it must not have been important! :-)

I always hide stuff in my underwear drawer. I always find it.

laureth's avatar

In the Laureth house, the euphemism for “I can’t find something” is “I must have put it in a safe place.”

rooeytoo's avatar

Yes and I hate to admit it but the older I get the more frequently it happens!

Yes. Because of the possibility of identity theft and to keep the information safe from hackers, I put my financial information (account numbers and such) only on a removable (USB) drive and only work on it when not connected to the Internet. Some years ago, before going on an extended trip, I wanted to hide it in a safe place such that no one would find it if anyone broke into my place. I eliminated all obvious places such as, yes @chyna, underwear drawers. Well, I hid it so well that not even I could find it when I got back.

This year, I moved to another house, and I thought that since I had to pack up everything to move, for sure I would find it. Nope. It’s like it has disappeared into another dimension.

I’ve lost other things, not because I hid them, but I’ve simply lost them. They’ve just disappeared. The strangest one, to me, was not a small object, either. It was the extension tube plus the end brush of my vacuum cleaner. I’ve never used the vacuum cleaner outdoors, never lent it to anyone, but somehow the tube and brush are gone! And they did not turn up on my move, either. Most mysterious.

@Brian1946 I was visiting my mom, so just had my suitcase with me. I thought I put it in between the pages of the book I had with me, so when I got home I unpacked and then went to get the slide out of the book, and it wasn’t there. Hence tearing my house apart looking for it. I mean, how far could it have gone? It’s the darndest thing…
