There really isn’t a 60’s/70’s hippie look without being stereotypical. Just go with a very natural look (i.e. don’t fix your hair up, don’t wear makeup, loose clothing, organic fabrics, etc.).

Tie dye, long hair, headband around forehead, torn-up bell bottoms, water buffalo sandals

Assuming you mean for girls, correct?

Gotta have the hip hugger bell bottom jeans with a wide leather belt, preferably one with one of those two hole belt buckles with dual rows of holes that run the entire length of the belt.

Tube tops were big, as were very loose fitting flowy tie dye blouses.

As for hair, long and natural with a strip of leather or a bandana used as a headband.

As for jewelry, a big peace sign to hang around your neck is a must.

Shoes – leather sandals were huge, as were those “clogs” with wooden soles and a leather top strap. Of course, any old platform shoe will do…

For girls, yes. ;) And it might have to be a little stereotypical, just for people to recognize it as hippie style…

No bra, like you’re smuggling peanuts.

newtscamander's avatar

@ucme interesting, might lead to not getting into the club, though :D

Dutchess_III's avatar

Bell bottoms with the hem ripped out out and patches all over the jeans. And go barefoot if you can! If not, brown leather sandals.

ucme's avatar

@scuniper Nah, you’ll get in for sure. Authenticity is key.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Oh! A fringed leather jacket.

Pigtails, headband, wild colorful gypsy skirts, or torn up levis.
Dangely earrings, mood rings, jinglely ankle bracelets, beads and birkenstocks, moccasins, boots or sandles, a colorful crocheted shawl, John Lennon glasses…hey come on over, I’m close to the original and have tons of gypsy skirts. ;-)

Hip hugger bell bottoms worn out/ ripped across and frayed at knees or wrap around Indian print skirt, peasant blouse or halter top, double buckle moccasins, or Dr. Scholls, big hoop earrings, lots of rings, braided leather string bracelets. Hair parted down the middle, ‘feathered’ Farrah Fawcett wings if your hair will do that.

Peace symbols.

Dutchess_III's avatar

OH OH OH @Coloma ! Overalls!! That reek of old bong water and pee!

Hip hugger, bell bottom pants (especially ones that have had about one foot of the seem ripped from the bottom up, and had another piece of psychedelic fabric stitched in there to make the bell even bigger). Like these

A big wide leather belt with a big belt buckle that says love on it.

A peace sign patch on the jeans and/or a peace sign necklace.

A chunky turquoise ring.

Either straight hair, parted down the middle, or 2 low slung braids.

A wrist full of thin metal bracelets that jingle when you move.

A macrame purse

Or an American Indian leather purse.

Love beads (which you can easily string yourself).

A peasant blouse

A fringed leather jacket or vest, or a poncho, especially a potholder-style poncho.

Natural colored leather sandals.

Granny glasses, especially octagonal wire rimmed glasses.

A big psychedelic head scarf

Or an Indian-style headband with big hoop earrings like this

Or a dashiki-style dress or caftan

Here is an beautiful example of a 60’s hippy girl. I love this outfit!

And check out an awesome Cher when she was a hippy!!!

Medallions. Don’t forget medallions.

john65pennington's avatar

A flower in your hair is ESSENTIAL.

I was there when it all happened and take along an old guitar for looks.

Sandals, wear old leather sandals for that perfect hippie look and give a lot of peace signs.

Kardamom's avatar

@Hain_roo Yes! I completely love that era of clothing! I was in kindergarden when the whole Woodstock thing was happening, but the whole fashion thing really did a number on me and I love it.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I love it too, and I’m SO glad more flared jeans are back. They just look so much better than those straight legs from the 80’s, and I don’t think it’s just because bell bottoms are what I came of age in. I really think they are more flattering.

Hain_roo's avatar

I hear that !
(I dress that way today, to an extent)

Dutchess_III's avatar

Everyone does because it’s just COOL!!!!

dabbler's avatar

Bell bottom pants for sure ! And psychedelic prints on top. Maybe a headband.
And a groovy groovy smile.

Coloma's avatar

Don’t forget the tye dye!

@Dutchess_III LOL..oh those were the days!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Too fun! From what I remember of them @Coloma :)

Dutchess_III's avatar

Don’t forget the Boones farm….

Coloma's avatar

Strawberry wine, carob covered almonds and bong hits. lol

saint's avatar

From what I hear, it is essential to have serious BO and to try to cover it with Patchouli oil.

Dutchess_III's avatar

No, @saint. From experience I can tell you that you try to cover it with old bong water and pee, even if you don’t have BO.

elbanditoroso's avatar

Underarm hair (for a woman)

YoBob's avatar

Ah yes, @Dutchess_III, Those were the days…. ;)

newtscamander's avatar

These answers are fantastic. You’ve gotten me all excited ! Can’t wait for Sunday to come now ! I’ll be the best 21st century hippie that night ! Oh, I remembered my Karma Kream, lots of patchouli in there.Going to use that. Also, can anyone tell me if there’s one cigarette brand that was favoured by hippies or modern in their golden age ? For authenticity ;) Thanks!

YoBob's avatar

Well…erm… I seem to remember plenty of “cigarettes”, but most of them were…erm… hand rolled…(ahem)..

newtscamander's avatar

Ah, right, for the peaceful mood to go along with my costume ;)

Coloma's avatar

@scuniper

Oh yes…Virginia Slims & Shermans.

newtscamander's avatar

@Coloma bet these aren’t sold anymore, right?

Dutchess_III's avatar

O god…I AM kidding about the old bong water! Please, don’t go there! I mean, I did, but trust me—it was an accident!

Here’s your peaceful mood!

No @Coloma the ones that you rolled up in the papers that had a picture of Jesus on the box. Silly.

newtscamander's avatar

@Dutchess_III I definitely won’t go there, that’s too authentic :) Nice song ;)

Dutchess_III's avatar

Definitely flowers in your hair! But prolly fake ones for the long haul.

dabbler's avatar

@Dutchess_III Fake flowers, how funny and apt! I Remember realistic plastic flowers and plants were a new thing at that time and novel enough to not yet be considered with disdain.

Dutchess_III's avatar

My Mom used to spray paint those HUGE dandelion fluff balls. It was cool.

newtscamander's avatar

@Dutchess_III for decorating? that sounds pretty :)

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yes, for decorating. She’d spray it with hairspray first to really fix them into place, then spray them whatever color. It was neat when mixed with Other Stuff.
