Have you or anyone you know named their newborn baby after a character in the Hunger Games?

Asked by pkuttner (150points) March 28th, 2012

I hear that these names are getting very popular. Even if the person didn’t give the name AFTER a character, have you heard these names at all for new babies recently? Katniss, Primrose, Gale, Rue, Cato, etc.

I might name a baby Primrose, but it wouldn’t be after a character in Hunger Games. My great great grandmother was named Primrose, so that would be my only reason to use it.

When I have a baby, I might name her Glimmer, with a middle name Katniss. And her little sister Prim with a middle name Rue. And for a son: Peeta with a middle name Gale, because I love Peeta in the books.

@WestRiverrat have you read the books?

No, and if I did it wouldn’t change my answer.

No. Everyone I know has better taste in literature.

P.S. “Gale” is a very old name given to boys, though I’m not sure if Suzanne Collins knows that.

I once knew a man named Gale, but it was many years before the books were ever thought of. I kind of like Rue for a middle name.

There’s rosemary, there’s rue…

I wonder if any Shakespeare lovers are regretting their choice now…

My dog, we’re doing this again?
None of my friends or acquaintances are anticipating childbirth within the memetic blast radius of this particular YA-Lit craze, so no.

I’ve know both male and female Gales. Seems most are female. Primrose is a beautiful name. Cato sounds like a conservative think tank. Rue seems a terrible name. I’d rue the day they named me that. But maybe being a boy named Rue is better than Sue.

I know a Roux. (She’s 21).

My last attempt at naming things – pets – involved the various little fiddly bits that you see on letters in the Special Characters menu in Word. “Cedilla” sits higher on my list of potentials than does “Peeta.”

No, but I do wonder how many people will actually name their kids some of these names without looking at what it means. Rue is a cute character name but for a real life person, it wouldn’t be cool.

rue (http://definr.com/rue)

n 1: European strong-scented perennial herb with gray-green
bitter-tasting leaves; an irritant similar to poison ivy
[syn: herb of grace, Ruta graveolens]
2: leaves sometimes used for flavoring fruit or claret cup but
should be used with great caution: can cause irritation
like poison ivy
v : feel remorse for; feel sorry for; be contrite about [syn: repent,
regret]
Might as well name the kid Remose or Regret or Poison Ivy.

@dappled_leaves yep, that’s one way to describe her! Wait a minute… I see what you did there!
