Should we hang curtains?

Asked by livelaughlove21 (15724points) October 18th, 2012 from iPhone

We recently moved into a new home and the house came with good thick blinds on all windows. We bought drapes but haven’t put them up yet. My mother suggested not doing it because those expensive blinds block out enough light and they look good on their own. But it just seems…strange not having any.

Any thoughts on this? Do you find blinds, decorative or functional, a necessity? Or if it’s just preference, what’s yours?

I prefer blinds or plantation shutters to drapes. Drapes are so sixties and seventies. And blinds and shutters allow you a variety of ways to allow in light while keeping things private.

@zenvelo This might sound stupid, but how can you tell the difference between plantation blinds and others? Ours were purchased by the builder, so I’m not sure what type they are, but they’re thick, white, and sturdy like wood. Pretty standard for new homes I suppose.

We have a cat, so not putting up drapes would be nice with the cat hair issue, but I just don’t want the room to look…sterile or unfinished. I never pay attention to such things in other people’s houses. And what about bedrooms?

Getting our $200 back for the curtains would be pretty sweet too.

Sounds like plantation shutters to me. Custom built wood or a composite and finished. You can warm up your rooms with the rest of your decor. Or I would personally.

Blinds are blinds and shutters are shutters. Blinds go up and down or sideways (vertical blinds) and shutters open up like a door, or fold on a hinge. Shutters can be on the exterior of a home or interior.

@livelaughlove21 It depends on your decor and your style. I have curtains in two rooms now, and wood blinds almost everywhere else, a few rooms have a different type of blinds. If you have shutters it is odd to put curtains over them, because of how they open, but I guess you could do a simple side curtain. I would not say you can’t do it. If they are blinds it can go either way I would say, you can do the curtains to soften up the room and add color.

I think look through a bunch of catalogs and magazines.

It’s very much a personal choice. When I moved into my house there were existing curtains which I took down – not that they were ugly, but that it wasn’t “me”. And I put up blinds (various widths, various colors) depending on the room.

But it boils down to you and your comfort level. If curtains make a house look “complete” for you, then do it.

Curtains can help your home keep its heat in the winter. Open them during the day yo let sunshine in and close them at night or on cloudy days.

Dust catchers are no longer required for interior design to be considered chic. Live without them for a while and you’ll never miss them. I’d take them back while you still can.

^^ Asthmatics don’t have curtains for this reason. Blinds are functional, look better, and are cleaner.

I have blinds throughout my house but also have ultra sheer curtains in all the rooms. I rarely put the blinds down as I live on a secluded property with nobody around to peep in the windows except the horses and cats. lol
I have a fetish for fluttering curtains in the breeze and just LOVE it when the cross breezes blow the curtains around. Sheers ad such a nice ambiance to things

My living room has these gorgeous, sheer, amber brown curtains that allow me to see out yet block the harshest rays of the sun and my bedroom is my favorite, with silky sheer yellow/gold and white floor length curtains that I can drape over the sides of my bed like a faux canopy. When the breeze blows through the opposing windows it is “sheer” magic. :-)

I agree with @Coloma flowing sheer curtains are very romantic, seductive and make me happy.
Of course there are places where you might not want that, but perhaps try it on a window where you will get a breeze. You might like the effect.

Curtains also add acoustic damping, rooms with curtains have a lot less echo.

I’m not a big drapes person. Most of my windows have blinds or shades and just valances to add color. I like light.
