How did you first know you were pregnant? (Before the test!)

Asked by laureth (27199points) April 20th, 2013

Obviously you can tell with a pregnancy test of some sort, but I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about people who knew before there was enough hCG to register on a test.

I understand that some women, especially those who were pregnant previously, “just know.” They feel “different” or “off.” What I’m wondering, is what “different” or “off” feel like in this context.

Thanks for listening!

I can’t be specific with my first pregnancy and I really wasn’t sure until I had the test.
With the second pregnancy I had bruises from where the IV iron shots had leaked. I knew I was pregnant when the bruise suddenly disappeared. My body was needing the iron and absorbed it right out of my tissue.
this was before OTC pregnancy tests.

My breasts began to ache and I felt slightly thicker around the waist.

Have you ever had a feeling that “something” was going to happen, you didn’t know exactly what, but you just “knew” that there was a change that was going to take place? A new love, a new job, a death, a new house….That feeling that a big change was going to happen in your life could maybe describe the “feeling.” Or maybe that feeling you would get before school started in the fall and summer was coming to an end. You couldn’t exactly see anything physically happening just yet, but you knew, even as a kid, you knew instinctively that things were changing. Oh, boy, @laureth! Is congratulations perhaps in order?

Also, my breasts were tender and I kept thinking, maybe and maybe not, that my navel felt weird.

My ex said she “just knew”, even though it was a few days before her next period was due. She said she felt a shift in her hormones but in a pleasant way, that her body felt “well” despite her usual aches and pains. So she went and got an at home test and took and it was positive.

My best friend said he and his wife had sex one night and when they were done he turned to her and said “I bet you’re pregnant now”. He was right.

I wasn’t going to say this because it might not seem helpful but… I honestly did not know until I took the test. So it is totally possible not to notice any of the more subtle signs.

BK, sometimes I feel like that, sometimes I don’t, but it seems only randomly related to what happens in reality. I’m good at talking myself into feeling or not feeling that sort of thing.

Unsure about the congrats.

Tender breasts and a little queasiness – the second time.

I didn’t know, but my then-husband did, weirdly. Each time, I had one period at the normal time (though it was lighter than usual), so I assumed I wasn’t pregnant. Each time, I got sick as a dog around the same time as the period came, but thought I was genuinely sick (it wasn’t just throwing up, I felt like I had the flu.) Each time, my then-husband said, “I bet you’re pregnant”, and he was right – all three times.

I just knew.

I was getting ready in the morning but hadn’t finished dressing. I brushed my teeth, wearing just my underwear, and looked myself in the bathroom mirror. I was surprised by what I saw and thought, “Those have never been that big!” Later that morning, I bought a test and got a positive result.

My breasts were slightly tender, I was a little queasy, and I just had this general feeling of being “off.”

I felt so un-pregnant that I was certain I was NOT until I saw the second pink line. I was wondering why my period hadn’t started yet and wanted to be on the safe side before buying a bottle of wine to have with dinner. It turned out that I had already had my last drink for 9+ months.

I didn’t feel pregnant at all for a few weeks. And then it felt like unrelenting food poisoning for 6 weeks or so.

We had been trying and checked to see when I missed a period. The first time it was 2 months; the second, only one month. Made me wonder at the fact I’d never gotten pregnant before. There were plenty of opportunities.

I didn’t know (no experience), but in hindsight I should have. The scent and taste of coffee (which I drank regularly) sickened me and there were other changes in my tastes for food.

I had unprotected sex while on the pill with my then bf of a year at the end of the month I somehow just got a feeling and so I did a pregnancy test. I had a healthy baby girl and all the while of being 2 weeks pregnant I took 2 weeks worth of birth control. I don’t know how that happened.

FYI I have been asked before and no they were not tampered with.

I felt weak and faint and could not go without food too long, before lunch time.
I had to eat before lunch ( say 10am) then at lunchtime too.
Eating for two.

@bkcunningham asked, “Will you keep us posted when the time is right, please?”

Everything I thought was a symptom went away prior to the blood test at the doc. The test came back negative. I don’t know if I was and then suddenly wasn’t, as has happened before, or if I just plain old wasn’t. Oh well.

@laureth Sorry to hear that. The @laureths will have brilliant babies some day.

Aww, @laureth. I’m sorry. The fun part is you just have to keep trying. It still hurt when you want it so badly. Hang in there. Thanks for the update. I expect more updates from you. This one doesn’t let you off the hook.
