Did you ever cure yourself of a serious illness without prescription medications or surgeries?

Asked by Aster (20023points) April 29th, 2013

Society appears to be leaning in the direction of believing that “the body can heal itself if given the proper nutrients.” Did or do you believe this to the extent that you feel you cured yourself of an illness without using medications but by other means?

I feel most medications are not necessary and we can heal ourselves through various methods. Not all but most.

-One of my methods is asking my God to bathe me in white healing light and visualize that moving from my feet to my head.
-I don’t take aspirin or any medications except my doctor is making me take cholesterol pills (my family is predisposed.)
-I don’t use alcohol much or any hard drugs, and get my right hours of sleep every night.
-Cleanliness is important to me as well as exercise.

@Aster In my mind I am, but most people think I’m a little bit of a loner/ nerdle type…lol Thanks!

*I realize I probably didn’t cure my mom of her Stage 4 cancer that has gone into remission, but I like to think that God and I working together with many friends and family members did. Either way her last two scans she has been cancer free, woo hoo!!

I have monthly cbc’s turns out for over a year I had low blood sugar. Often below 70 which means you are unable to legally drive. Instead of getting a referral to a doctor for diabetes or taking a meter to measure my blood sugar I radically changed my diet. every now and again I push things farther then they should and recognize signs of low blood sugar. But overall my tests have been great and so have I.

When first I was diagnosed with Autoimmune hepatitis they were also playing around with diagnoses such as ibs leaky gut diverticulitus chrones etc. I turned out to be celiac with multiple food allergies. Never needed any meds to straighten me out. Just food healing.

I also have had 3 herniated disks two in my neck one in my back sciatica and a torn tendon in my shoulder. A lot of walks when it hurt too bad to do anything else hatha yoga and stretching and building up muscle around injured areas. Keeping aware of stress issues and management of it. They toyed with shots for me I tried one once and talked about surgeries and fusing disks. Since then I have read much about the placebo effect of these procedures and am glad I didn’t take that route esp since I know people with limited mobility because of these.

Many surgeries and pills have not been studied for the placebo effect. The ones that have have noted that the placebo effect was just as effective as the real thing. Dan Ariely has a few interesting things to say about this in his book predictable irrationality.

@KNOWITALL I use a similar technique. I call down lights from a higher being to help with mental emotional and physical concerns. It is very relaxing and effective. When someone does it with me it is startling how much you can feel, vibrationally etc. It is super amplified. But still effective alone.

Not long ago I had two high readings for my blood pressure. Its now perfect. Plus I am under a great deal of pressure. I started using Hymalain salt in my diet. I don’t know if that sorted me out.

I believe we do tend to trust medical doctors too readily instead of trying other factors first. It does depend though on the illness of course.

I will use the natural method for some things, but I have never cured myself of anything other than with medicine.

If I have a cold, I will have some chicken soup. Maybe its a myth that it helps cure anything, but at least the vapor clears your head for a while, and it tastes nice while you are feeling down. However, if I have anything serious, I get myself to a doctor.

I agree with @LornaLove in that we trust doctors too readily, because some of them are probably morons that got lucky, or lazy, or not paying attention, after all they are human. However, the scientific peer review double blind clinical trial medicine of the west, is you number one stop if you have any illness.

Being sick is very serious, and all evidence points to western medicine as the best that we have for now. given how serious your health is, I can’t really put my trust in anything else.

Yes, you can do yourself a load of good by drinking more water, and cutting out certain things, but for anything above a common cold or or temporary discomfort of some kind, I get myself to a doctor, and if have any kind of problem with that specific doctor, I can get a second doctor to take a look instead.

In 1996 I was diagnosed with Graves Disease. I have gone into remission for years at a time and the doctors still refute the evidence and don’t know what to make of it.

I wouldn’t have lived past the age of 4 without medicine. It’s something I’ve had to think about my whole life. People who tell me I can cure my “diabetes” with some magic (especially when they don’t have a clue what type I have… or that it’s the serious type…) make me rabid.

I did stopped self-injury without any therapy or medicine, and some people have told me that that is pretty impressive. All it took was removing a very shitty situation from my life…

I have eliminated kidney stones twice now (and a third time when it was just a twinge) with Thyme tea.

Does that count?

I wanted to clarify my earlier statement. I believe in complementary medicine. The blending of alternative and western medicine.

The placebo effect as stated before can be strong. Both alt and western medicine have benefited from this phenomon but there are real medical conditions that good nutrition and exercise as well as common sense won’t heal itself.
For those cases by all means it is a case of good sense to depend on doctors for this.

Like @bookish1, I’d be dead if it weren’t for medication.

I didn’t really “cure” anything, but I had my babies at home. 4 separate doctors on different pregnancies told me for various reasons that I couldn’t have a vaginal birth.

I said, “Oh Yes. Yes I can!” and I did. Everything went smoothly.
