Any ideas for Party Food?

I’m throwing a murder mystery dinner party with a pirate theme. Any of you have suggestions for Caribbean party recipes? The thing is, I’m looking for easy stuff, preferably finger food. I’m not in the mood to spend too much time in the kitchen right now (too hot). While my friends will bring food themselves, they would like some ideas too.

Jerk chicken.

Fruit – (fruit salad, or slices of fruits like watermelon, pineapple, kiwi, other melons)

tropical drinks of course

@jca I should add that almost all of us are vegetarians, so we won’t be eating any meat or fish. (Too late to edit the details :/) But thanks, fruit salad’s perfect!

Fried plantains. (I work with a lot of people from the Caribbean).

If you want some food ideas, look at the site for the restaurant chain “Bahama Breeze.” They have a good menu with food that’s flavorful but not incredibly spicy. They also have incredible drinks that will knock you on your butt.

You could try baking some sweetbread. Google how to make sweetbread and you can try that. Another Caribbean delicacy is Tambarind Balls. You could also make that too. I know you said finger food, but if you are looking for a dish, try Pealu. Its a mixture of rice pigeon peas and chicken…doesnt take very long to cook and its easy. You could serve it with some potato salad or coleslaw.

Vegetable egg rolls (usually do not contain eggs).

Fruit and rice cocktail salad.
You buy a can of fruit cocktail and you make plain white rice.

You get some whipping cream or Cool whip and mix all three together.
Let set in the fridge covered with saran wrap… until chilled

Eat promptly.

@jca You can add vanilla extract to taste… I grew up with this as a snack food. Bread pudding is what my mom grew up on, but the recipe eludes me.

Baked Jerk Tofu

Here is a recipe for a Haitian condiment called Pikliz which is kind of like kim-chi, only hotter, than can be made ahead of time.

Vegetarian Cuban Sandwiches Most of these could be assembled ahead of time, then grilled right before serving.

Caribbean Sweet Potato Salad

These are not exactly from the Caribbean, but you might like Fresh Spring Rolls with Mango

You could buy or make your own Caribbean BBQ Sauce (either omitting the Worcestershire sauce, or using a vegetarian option) and then putting the sauce and a bag of vegetarian meatballs into a crockpot to keep them warm.

These Fruit Kabobs sound good.

Gotta run, I’ll be back later. I’m thinking some kind of banana filled wontons…

How about some Bake and Shark? You buy some portions of shark slices and use some celantro seasoning to season the shark first and deep fry it until it gets golden brown. For the bake, I am referring to fried bake. When you make the dough, flatten it out and fry until it raises——google it to make sure—then cut the bake and put the shark inside and use it as a sandwich. Dress it with pepper, coleslaw, salad dressing and garlic sauce. That is a great delicacy!!! Another delicacy worth looking into is pholorie. Its a Caribbean dish that is from East Indian decent. Its curried balls of dough and you have to dip it in a peppery sauce. Also try looking up doubles. That is also an East Indian Caribbean dish where you have a small bake and you serve it with some curried Channa.

@jca I forgot you are supposed to not use the fruit juice… and everything needs to be stirred and eaten with in 24 hours of making and it needs to be kept in the fridge.

Here is what I was thinking about earlier Banana filled Wontons

Caribbean Black Beans with Orange Juice

Caribbean Stuffed Peppers

Jamaican Tempeh Turnovers

Callaloo (which can also be stuffed into the above recipe for the turnovers.

Sweet Potato and Black Bean Filled Wontons

Trinidad Aloo Balls

Mango Salsa which you can serve with Casabe (or good old tortilla chips)

Jerk Wontons with Caribbean Salsa The salsa can be made ahead of time, and the wontons (which are served as chips, rather than filled) can be made with this recipe, or you can find a prepared jerk seasoning at the grocery store if you don’t want to go to the trouble of making this yourself.

Caribbean-style Guacamole made with the addition of Scotch bonnet peppers and mango. Serve with tortilla chips.

Costco has a roasted pineapple salsa – just an idea if you’re into it and you’re a member.

There’s a cake called Black cake, which is Jamaican. It’s a fruit cake but the fruit is pulverized and it’s soaked in liquor. It’s black because all the fruit pulverized gives it a black appearance. I’m sure you could find the recipe online. The fruit is blended with the liquor for days, weeks or months and then that mixture is made into a cake batter. It’s soooo good. More liquor is poured onto the baked cake, so it’s soaked in liquor.

I’d make that Black Cake for Father’s Day festivities next weekend if it didn’t have to macerate for two weeks!

Macerate? Isn’t that what cows do? Is a cow required to make this cake? Ew.

@Dutchess_III You’ll be happy to know that macerate means to break something up (in this case fruit) or soften it up by soaking it in liquid, in this case booze : P

@jca Let me know how it turns out and if you like it. Kind of sounds like a cross between rum cake and Christmas fruit cake, both of which I like.
