@Jeruba You’re aboslutely right.

How about the French word “copain” then? Although that is singular like friend would be.

How about the Dutch word kennis?

Totally reaching here – I do not speak Dutch. :)

People I might become friends with? O no. You said 6 letters.
I agree with @jaytkay . It’s amigos. With all those vowels, it’s definitely a crossword word.

Something is not right. If friends, or the Spanish equivalent amigos, are casual acquaintances, then how do you refer to close acquaintances? A short word for casual acquaintance would be a convenient way to refer, for example, to people you work with who you would not regard as friends.

Yes – I wondered about that too. I wish the OP, who has the puzzle, would come back with the answer.

Fellas.

A clue in a crossword puzzle doesn’t have to measure up to a dictionary standard of precision.

But it should be reliably consistent with respect to singular versus plural.

Folks – thanks a bunch for all the responses. I “think” the clue means ephemeral friendships like you would make during a train journey or a trek, for instance – where you have conversations/discussions and then you each go your own way – so it is not a synonym for “friends”.

@yesme Do you have any of the letters in it?

none that I am sure of :(
