Do you think we'll ever reach a stage where gay people are used in advertising?

Asked by spiritual (1271points) August 21st, 2013

I mean for standard products or services. I doubt it, as a lot of adverts still have a throw back ideal of a “perfect family” with two parents and kids.
Even though there is supposed to be equality, it seems like advertising is ten steps behind everyone else to me.
Do you think any product or service will ever be brave enough to take that step?
Would it offend you if you saw an advert promoting homosexuality or do you think it’s about time?

They are

Oh, yeah, and here, too.

Mad props to JC Penney, by the way. Their whole rebrand is really cool, and I like their new price structure.

There are many, many gay models, but that’s not what you are asking. Yes, I think there will be ads with two men or two women with children, obviously a family. It isn’t far away.

Thanks @Seek_Kolinahr. I had never seen that, not being American. That’s good to know :).

There already are, both on TV and in print media.

Advertisers are WAY AHEAD of politicians on this. Advertisers know that the concept of “traditional families” is antiquated and they have changed their marketing to reflect that. Politicians, as usual, are in the dark ages.

Consider the advertising you see today on almost any channel (but the religious ones):

- erectile dysfunction drugs
– vibrators and other sexual aids for women and couples
– birth control (condoms and pills)
– morning after drug

Advertisers are much more in tune with America.

@elbanditoroso But they still can’t say “vagina” in a tampon commercial.

There already are.

I think it has more to do with the majority of the population is heterosexual, and most advertising is simply going after their target market. I think we will see more and more products with two women or two men, but not necessarily implying they are a couple, rather leaving it up to the imagination and interpretation of the audience.

There was this whole brouhaha a few years ago when Ikea had a gay couple shopping. 1994
Searching for Ikea gay on youtube showed me a ton of other commercials from other companies, have a look.

I have seen a number of them, but considering the fallout to that commercial that featured an interracial couple (“shoving multiculturalism down our throats!”), I can’t imagine commercials with homosexuals fare too much better.

I’ve seen a few, including this one for MacDonalds that have gay characters, but I have no idea if they use gay actors. It’s happenning gradually. Even Amazon have done one

@downtide That McD’s commercial is great. In college we used to joke that gay couples are lucky because they can room together. My school was very loose about people staying over, my boyfriend could stay unending, but it would have inconvenienced my roommate.

Here’s a Danish commercial for a bank with two women kissing.

Only the good looking ones.

I’m so glad to Iearn that gay people are being used in commercials already. I didn’t know that. I don’t watch much TV, but I didn’t realize I missed that much.

spiritual's avatar

@Sunny2 me either! I guess I’ve just missed all those adverts.
